Attaf Reaffirms Algeria’s Firm Commitment to Sahrawi Self-Determination

Algiers, Algeria | Algeria has once again underscored its unwavering diplomatic stance in support of the Sahrawi cause, as Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, received on Wednesday in Algiers his Sahrawi counterpart, Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
According to a communiqué released by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting unfolded in a spirit of “concerted and coordinated consultation” between both delegations, centering on the latest diplomatic developments concerning the question of Western Sahara. The discussions were particularly shaped by the recently published report of the United Nations Secretary-General, which is currently under review by the UN General Assembly.
Both parties stressed the necessity of bolstering the efforts led by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to reinvigorate the stalled peace process, with the ultimate goal of enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their “inalienable and imprescriptible right to self-determination, in full conformity with international legality.”
In his exchanges with Beissat, Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s principled position, grounded in international law and the Charter of the United Nations, reiterating that the decolonization of Western Sahara remains a non-negotiable issue of justice and legitimacy. The statement emphasized that Algeria, alongside like-minded states and organizations, will persist in supporting the Sahrawi struggle until the Sahrawi people are granted the full exercise of their sovereign will through a free and fair referendum.
This latest high-level consultation not only reflects the enduring solidarity between Algeria and the Sahrawi Republic but also reaffirms Algiers’ broader regional role as a staunch advocate of liberation movements and the defense of peoples’ rights to independence.
