Attaf Received in Zagreb as Algeria and Croatia Advance Bilateral Coordination
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, was received on Monday in Zagreb by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, as part of his official visit to the Republic of Croatia.
The meeting opened with an expression of condolences from the Croatian Prime Minister, who asked Attaf to convey his sympathy to the President of the Republic and to the Algerian people following the death of former President Liamine Zeroual. The gesture reflected the diplomatic courtesy extended between the two states at a time of national mourning in Algeria.
Attaf, in turn, expressed appreciation for the message of solidarity and conveyed the greetings of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, along with Algeria’s readiness to work with Croatia to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Discussions between the two sides focused on reviewing the current state of relations and identifying practical avenues to deepen cooperation. The talks addressed political coordination as well as economic and sectoral partnerships, in the context of preparations for upcoming bilateral meetings at the level of both countries’ leadership.
Earlier in the day, Attaf laid a wreath at the memorial dedicated to the victims of Croatia’s War of Independence. The gesture formed part of established diplomatic protocol and reflected Algeria’s recognition of the historical experiences that have shaped Croatia’s national trajectory.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this visit also recalls earlier links between the two countries, including expressions of support from Croatian circles during Algeria’s liberation struggle and forms of cooperation in the years that followed independence. These references continue to inform the framework of relations between the two states.
The visit to Zagreb is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at structuring bilateral exchanges in a more sustained manner, with attention to economic cooperation, investment, and institutional dialogue.
