Algiers, Algeria | June 10th, 2025 — The Algerian judiciary has officially qualified the recent attempted self-immolation in front of the Ministry of Justice as a “premeditated act” masterminded by an organized criminal group with subversive objectives. In a public statement issued Tuesday by the tribunal of Sidi M’hamed, the judiciary laid bare the first findings of a wide-ranging investigation that points to a deliberate and coordinated attempt to disrupt public order and undermine state institutions.

According to the communiqué, the judicial police, acting under the supervision of the competent prosecutorial authorities, conducted a thorough investigation into the incident, which occurred earlier this month and initially appeared as an isolated act of personal despair. However, evidence uncovered during the probe revealed that the act was not spontaneous, but rather the product of careful orchestration by a five-member criminal cell.

The group preassigned roles in advance: while one individual attempted the self-immolation, others were tasked with recording the incident and preparing it for dissemination on social media platforms. The objective, authorities assert, was to exploit the graphic nature of the act to incite public outrage, provoke instability, and delegitimize the state’s institutions by framing the narrative around systemic oppression.

More alarmingly, the judiciary revealed that the person who filmed the incident maintains ties with individuals residing abroad. The same individual holds multiple bank accounts and spent two years living in a foreign country, where he is suspected of having developed contacts with groups hostile to the Algerian state. Financial records indicate that he received monetary transfers to his postal account from several of these foreign contacts—raising suspicions of external funding for acts designed to sow chaos on Algerian soil.

“These findings clearly indicate that this was not an impulsive act born of personal grievance, but a politically motivated stunt aimed at destabilizing national institutions and spreading subversive propaganda through online platforms,” the communiqué stated.

The statement emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted under the direct supervision of Algeria’s competent legal authorities. Further inquiries are focused on mapping out the full extent of the network’s connections, including potential collaborators operating from abroad, financial backers, and digital facilitators involved in the dissemination campaign.

This case, which initially shocked the public due to its violent and emotionally charged nature, has now taken on broader national security dimensions. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to uphold public order and ensure that no attempt to manipulate public opinion or tarnish the integrity of state institutions will go unpunished.
