AU Summit: Algeria, President Tebboune Lauded for Role in Peace, Security in Africa

ALGIERS โ February 16, 2026 โ The 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Summit highlighted Algeriaโs pivotal role, and that of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in combating terrorism and promoting peace across the continent.
The summit also marked a historic milestone with the adoption of the Algiers Declaration, which criminalizes colonialism and establishes November 30 as a day of tribute to victims of transatlantic slavery, colonization, and apartheid.
Tebbouneโs Efforts Recognized
President Tebboune, serving as the AU Coordinator for counter-terrorism and violent extremism, was praised for his efforts to strengthen and implement the continental program in this field, fostering unity and enhanced coordination among member states.
Regarding peace and security in Africa, the summit called for โaccelerated implementation of practical and concrete proposalsโ presented by Algeria, while acknowledging โthe progress achieved by the AU Commission in supporting continental responses to terrorism and violent extremism, as well as the strengthening of institutional capacities of member states.โ
The summit also adopted the conclusions of the 12th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, held in December 2025 (Oran Process), emphasizing Algeriaโs role, alongside the A3 countries, in defending African interests at the United Nations Security Council.
Algeria Leads the Charge to Criminalize Colonialism in Africa
The Algiers Declaration on colonial crimes in Africa enshrines November 30 as the โAfrican Day of Tribute to African Martyrs and Victims of Transatlantic Slavery, Colonization, and Apartheid,โ recognizing President Tebboune for his initiative. The declaration urges former colonial powers to formally acknowledge past injustices and establish a platform for environmental justice and reparations.
At this critical juncture in Africaโs history, Algeria reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, support for African solutions to African problems, and active contribution to peace, stability, and the strengthening of conflict prevention mechanisms.
Experts noted that Algeria is โhistorically and morally qualifiedโ to lead efforts to criminalize colonization in Africa, given its history of resistance and its key role in supporting liberation movements. Ethiopian expert Moussa Shiko emphasized that the issue of criminalizing colonization has now become a serious and actively debated agenda, propelled by Algeriaโs leadership.
