AU Summit Concludes in Addis Ababa with Focus on Water Security and Continental Priorities

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓕𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – The 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union concluded Sunday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, with Algeria represented by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, amid deliberations on strategic priorities shaping the continent’s political and economic trajectory.

Held under the theme “Ensuring Sustainable Availability of Water and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” the summit’s final day featured the presentation of key reports, including the annual review by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, alongside updates on Agenda 2063, the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme, and major continental initiatives spearheaded by the African Development Bank.

In a notable outcome, leaders adopted the Algiers Declaration on Colonial Crimes in Africa, designating November 30 as the African Day of Remembrance for African Martyrs and Victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Colonisation, and Apartheid, while commending Algeria’s initiative in advancing the proposal. The decision underscored a growing continental effort to confront historical injustices and consolidate collective memory as part of Africa’s broader political renewal.

Throughout the summit, Algeria reiterated its long-standing commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, the principle of “African solutions to African problems,” and strengthened mechanisms for prevention and mediation. Algiers also reaffirmed its support for deeper continental integration and solidarity, in line with its diplomatic doctrine rooted in multilateral cooperation and respect for sovereignty.

Algeria’s participation, officials said, reflects its sustained engagement under President Tebboune’s leadership in promoting African unity and advancing shared priorities in security, sustainable development, and regional stability, at a moment widely seen as pivotal for the continent’s strategic future.
