A transition marked by institutional continuity and national reverence as veteran statesman Salah Goudjil delivers a solemn farewell, highlighting decades of service and the enduring legacy of November

Algiers, Algeria | May 18th, 2025 — In a pivotal moment for Algeria’s upper legislative chamber, Azouz Nasri has officially declared his candidacy to succeed Salah Goudjil as Speaker of the Council of the Nation, the upper house of Parliament. The announcement was made this Sunday by the head of the presidential third group within the Council, coinciding with a significant shift in the chamber’s leadership and ushering in a new chapter in Algeria’s legislative history.

The candidacy of Azouz Nasri—former President of the Supreme Court, legal expert, and founding member of Talaiou El Houriyet (Vanguards of Liberties) party—comes as the long-serving and highly respected Salah Goudjil delivers his final address, formally marking the end of his parliamentary mandate. Goudjil’s departure, described as dignified and rich in patriotic sentiment, reflects a life steeped in national service and unwavering loyalty to Algeria’s historical legacy.

During a high-level coordination meeting with parliamentary group leaders ahead of a plenary session dedicated to the swearing-in of new appointed and elected members, as well as the election of the new Speaker of the Council, Goudjil offered a heartfelt farewell address. In it, he reflected on his tenure and reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to serving Algeria and embodying the values of the November Revolution.

“Throughout my parliamentary journey—first as a member and then as Speaker of the Council—I tirelessly worked to serve Algeria’s interests, to respond to the aspirations of its people, and to consolidate democracy through the constitutional prerogatives of the legislature,” Goudjil declared. He underscored that his term aligned with the consolidation of the “New Algeria of November,” under a lucid and visionary national leadership.

His speakership, which began on April 9, 2019, coincided with the country’s pivotal political transition following the 2019 Hirak movement—a peaceful national uprising that demanded systemic reform and an end to corruption. “I am proud that my leadership accompanied a national renewal born from an authentic and blessed Hirak that reverberated across the country, aspiring for change and the eradication of corruption so that the sacrifices of the martyrs lead Algeria toward greatness, strength, and prosperity,” he emphasized.

Goudjil also expressed deep pride in witnessing, more than seventy years after the outbreak of the War of National Liberation, the return of the spirit of November in a sovereign and dignified Algeria. He cited Algeria’s respected international stance, its emphasis on social justice, and the preservation of national memory—core themes of his mandate. “I contributed directly to the rooting of these values through the constitutional mechanisms of legislative power, by overseeing an efficient national parliamentary action aimed at endowing the country with a legislative framework capable of accompanying its comprehensive renaissance,” he stated.

Paying tribute to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s exceptional attention to the national memory, Goudjil reiterated the sacred duty of mujahideen to transmit the truth and preserve the November message for future generations. “I have fulfilled this duty and passed on the message,” he affirmed.

In his concluding remarks, the seasoned statesman recalled his lifelong journey of patriotic activism—from his youth in the nationalist movement to his active role as a mujahid in the National Liberation Army, and later in his post-independence national responsibilities. He thanked the members of the Council for their commitment to national interests beyond partisan affiliations and political divergences.

“I depart with a serene spirit, confident that victorious Algeria will never falter thanks to the strength of its institutions, the competence of its sons and daughters, and the genuine attachment of its citizens,” he concluded solemnly.
