Back-to-School Relief: 43 Solidarity Markets to Open Across Six Central Provinces on August 20

Algiers, Algeria |In a bid to ease the financial strain of the back-to-school season, Algeria’s Ministry of Commerce, through its Central Regional Directorate, will launch 43 solidarity markets for the sale of school supplies at reduced prices, opening on August 20 across six central wilayas.

The initiative, announced by Central Region Commerce Director Aïssa Michachou, is the result of coordinated efforts between state authorities and economic stakeholders to ensure that quality educational materials remain accessible to all social classes ahead of the 2025/2026 academic year.

Blida will host six markets, Tizi Ouzou a significant 21, Bouira three, Médéa seven, Ain Defla three, and Djelfa three. Each market will be strategically located in provincial capitals and major cities to maximize accessibility for citizens, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.

More than 290 economic operators — including importers, producers, wholesalers, and retailers — have committed to offering competitively priced, high-quality supplies. Michachou emphasized that these solidarity markets have proven immensely popular among the public, prompting authorities to double their number from last year’s 21 to this year’s 43.
