A flagship project under Algeria’s emergency water program, the Tighremt desalination facility is nearing completion and will provide over 300,000 m³ of potable water daily to Béjaïa and neighboring wilayas.

Algiers, Algeria | May 18th, 2025 — In a significant step towards strengthening Algeria’s water security, the construction of the seawater desalination plant in Tighremt, Béjaïa, is in its final stages and set to enter operational service in the near future. The progress was closely monitored during a high-level visit on Sunday morning by the Wali of Béjaïa, Kamel Eddine Kerbouche, accompanied by top executives from key national energy and infrastructure institutions.

Among those present were the President and CEO of the National Pipeline Company (ENAC), the advisor to the CEO of Sonatrach, and senior representatives of the Algerian Energy Company (AEC), the key stakeholders responsible for executing the project.

Governor Kerbouche reviewed the remaining phases of the project, which are now limited to final exterior fittings, pipeline cleaning, and technical checks of internal systems. Emphasizing the strategic importance of the project, he called for sustained commitment and an accelerated pace to ensure the station’s delivery within the targeted timeline.

The Wali highlighted that the Tighremt plant is one of Algeria’s structural responses to the escalating potable water crisis, especially in northern regions. The facility is part of the government’s emergency action plan and will have a daily production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters, distributed as follows: 200,000 m³ for Béjaïa, 50,000 m³ for Sétif, 30,000 m³ for Bouira, and 20,000 m³ for Bordj Bou Arréridj.

The on-site inspection also included a thorough review of the internal operational systems and connection to essential distribution networks. Following technical briefings, the governor reiterated the need to finalize the project swiftly, citing its essential role in guaranteeing drinking water supply for over four provinces.
