Gara Djebilet Mining Project Set to Generate 5,000 Direct Jobs, Transform Southwestern Algeria

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓙𝓪𝓷𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – The Director of Employment of the wilaya of Béchar, Belaid Chafaa, announced that the Gara Djebilet mining project is expected to generate approximately 5,000 direct jobs and nearly 20,000 indirect employment opportunities, underscoring its far-reaching economic and social impact.

Speaking on Tuesday as a guest on the national radio program “Good Morning, Algeria”, Mr. Chafaa described Gara Djebilet as a “project of the century,” opening vast economic and social prospects for southwestern Algeria and the country as a whole. He emphasized that this large-scale project will significantly contribute to strengthening national revenue streams, stimulating the mining processing industry, promoting economic sovereignty, and diversifying Algeria’s resources beyond hydrocarbons.

The Director of Employment further stressed that the economic significance of Gara Djebilet is measured not only by its industrial scale, but also by the magnitude of its social impact and the development momentum it is set to generate. The creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs is expected to serve as a powerful driver of local development, while encouraging investment in complementary sectors such as transport, agriculture, trade, and infrastructure.

Mr. Chafaa also highlighted the strategic importance of the future Western Mining Railway Corridor linking Gara Djebilet, Béchar, Tindouf, and Oran. This major infrastructure axis will help break the isolation of the southwestern regions, while fostering a sustained economic and social dynamic. The corridor is expected to offer young people in these areas enhanced opportunities for training, employment, and skills development, thereby reinforcing inclusive growth and long-term regional integration.
