Algiers – December 2025 – In an address delivered on Monday in Algiers, Minister of Religious Affairs and Wakfs, Youcef Belmehdi, underscored Algeria’s unwavering commitment to protecting the freedom of religious practice and safeguarding all places of worship. Speaking at the opening of the fourth edition of the scientific conference titled “Religious Freedom… Protection and Guarantees”, themed “Religious Freedom: Constitutional Achievements and Implementation Mechanisms”, Belmehdi highlighted the legal and institutional frameworks that enshrine religious liberty as a cornerstone of Algerian society.
“Algeria has established a clear Constitution and comprehensive legislation to guarantee freedom of worship, protect all places of worship, and uphold the rights of all citizens without exclusion or distinction,” Belmehdi asserted, emphasizing that these principles are not mere abstractions but actively enforced through state mechanisms.
The minister elaborated on the practical application of these laws, noting that Algeria has not only codified religious freedoms but has ensured their realization, creating conditions conducive to lawful religious practice while respecting the norms of the Algerian state. Belmehdi highlighted the role of the National Commission for Non-Muslim Worship, which functions as the official body coordinating and safeguarding the exercise of religious freedom for all communities.
Belmehdi framed Algeria’s approach as rooted in historical experience and global responsibility. “Given our position within the Islamic world and our deep historical legacy of coexistence between religions and cultures, we are convinced that dialogue is the only path to building a world founded on security and stability,” he said. He added that shared human values can dismantle the walls of hatred and construct bridges of understanding and solidarity between people.
Reaffirming Algeria’s historical role as a crossroads of civilizations, cultures, and beliefs, the minister noted, “Our nation has always been a land of liberties, cultural and religious diversity, and a meeting point of civilizations. This principle continues to guide our actions today.” He pointed to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s significant visit to the Vatican and the reception he received from His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as a testament to Algeria’s commitment to applying the principles of religious freedom in both domestic governance and international diplomacy.
Belmehdi further emphasized that his ministry operates under the guidance of the President to anchor a refined humanistic approach, promoting values of peace, tolerance, and concord among Muslim and non-Muslim citizens alike. “Our efforts aim to strengthen moderate religious awareness, reject extremism, violence, and criminality, and to ensure that Algeria remains a model of coexistence and spiritual security,” he stated.
The conference, attended by ambassadors and diplomatic representatives accredited to Algeria, included two scientific sessions addressing the constitutional framework for religious freedom and the practical mechanisms for its implementation within Algeria’s socio-institutional landscape. Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, Archbishop of Algiers, affirmed the tangible respect for freedom of worship in Algeria, noting, “We perceive and experience this respect in our daily lives.”
