Benedict Oramah: “Algeria Embodies the Spirit of Liberation While Driving Africa’s Economic Transformation”

Algiers – September 2025 – In an address delivered on the sidelines of the 4th edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) in Algiers, Benedict Oramah, President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), paid a profound tribute to Algeria’s revolutionary past while hailing its present role as a catalyst for Africa’s economic integration.
Oramah began by extending his gratitude to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and to the Algerian people for what he described as an “exemplary organization” of this landmark continental event, emphasizing that the Algiers edition of the IATF stands as a defining moment for Africa’s collective future.
Striking a deeply historical chord, the Afreximbank President honored Algeria’s revolutionary icons, invoking the legacy of Ahmed Ben Bella, Larbi Ben M’hidi, and Mohamed Khider—men who, he recalled, “sacrificed their lives for Algeria’s independence and freedom.” He then drew a direct parallel between that spirit of sacrifice and today’s transformative ambitions, declaring: “Under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria—and indeed our entire continent—are undergoing an unprecedented economic transformation.”
The scale of the Algiers Fair, he noted, is itself a testimony to this transformation: more than 30,000 visitors and 2,000 exhibitors from across the globe converged on the Algerian capital, positioning the country not only as host but as a strategic hub for intra-African trade and investment. Hosting such an event, Oramah underscored, is “no simple task” and reflects Algeria’s growing weight on the continental stage.
Concluding his address, the Afreximbank chief extended his appreciation to the African heads of state and government present, seeing in their participation “a mark of confidence in Algeria and in the African Union Commission.” That confidence, he argued, is essential to reinforcing Africa’s trade architecture and building the foundations of a self-reliant continental economy.
