Bengrina Hails Algeria’s Military Leadership in Africa, Slams Foreign Interference and Mercenary Proxies

The El Bina El Watani leader affirms Algeria’s strategic autonomy and rising regional influence, citing the “SALAM NORTH AFRICA III” exercise as a turning point in the country’s continental peacekeeping role.

Algiers, Algeria | May 28th, 2025 — In a powerful statement that reasserts Algeria’s growing stature in African security affairs, Abdelkader Bengrina, President of the El Bina El Watani Movement, emphasized that Algeria’s hosting of the “SALAM NORTH AFRICA III” exercise is a compelling demonstration of the country’s strategic leadership in continental peace and security efforts, free from foreign dictates.

Writing in a Facebook post, Bengrina stated:

“Algeria’s embrace of the ‘SALAM NORTH AFRICA III’ maneuver once again affirms the pivotal role it now plays in Africa’s vital matters of peace and security—relying on self-sufficiency and without interference from powers outside the region.”

He praised the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) for its professionalism and advanced capabilities, saying:

“Algeria has become a military force to be reckoned with. It has reached a level of professionalism that enables it to lead and supervise a strategic operation of this scale and complexity—aimed at strengthening operational readiness to ensure continental peace and stability, and enhancing regional military cooperation under the banner of the African Union.”

Bengrina stressed that Algeria’s participation and leadership in this multinational training—which simulates the deployment of a multidimensional peace support mission—is a direct outcome of the historic 2020 constitutional amendment. That amendment, he reminded, opened the door for Algeria’s military to engage in peacekeeping missions beyond its borders, provided they serve just and legal international objectives.

“This exercise is not coincidental—it is imposed by the accelerating regional and international developments, especially within our African continent, which is witnessing escalating tensions and growing conflicts in numerous states, particularly in the Sahel region,” he warned.

Without naming names, Bengrina condemned what he described as the regrettable trend of some post-coup African regimes turning to foreign mercenaries and external agendas. He accused them of opening their territories to foreign military actors who “undermine any viable political solution and mortgage the interests of their peoples to external ambitions.”

“While Algeria champions an African solution to African crises, we sadly witness certain states choosing instead to surrender sovereignty to mercenary forces and alien powers, rather than relying on the wealth of African experience and expertise.”

The “SALAM NORTH AFRICA III” exercise, held under the African Union framework, reinforces Algeria’s doctrinal shift toward proactive engagement in conflict prevention and peacekeeping, rooted in African solidarity and sovereignty. It also signals the state’s determination to counter destabilizing forces and to act as a pillar of regional stability in an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape.
