Dr. Berkane Bouderbala of CASIC Unveils a Visionary Framework for Preserving National Memory in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Algiers – November 2025 – Dr. Berkane Bouderbala, Director of the Algerian Center for Media and Communication Sciences (CASIC), presented a forward-looking analysis on the reconfiguration of national memory in the digital age during the Academic Media Forum on National Memory, organized by the Laboratory of Media and Digital Communication Studies at the University of Oum El Bouaghi. His intervention, entitled “National Memory in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: From Collective Narratives to Algorithmic Storytelling,” shed light on the deep epistemological and cultural shifts transforming the way nations construct, preserve, and transmit their collective identity.
In his scholarly presentation, Dr. Bouderbala offered an incisive reading of the transformations affecting the very notion of national memory amid the global digital revolution. He explained how societies have transitioned from traditional collective storytelling—once shaped by educational and media institutions—to a new paradigm of algorithmic narratives, now engineered by digital platforms and artificial intelligence algorithms that determine the visibility, hierarchy, and emotional framing of information.
According to Dr. Bouderbala, artificial intelligence is no longer merely a technical instrument, but a cultural actor that actively participates in shaping collective consciousness and shared memory. This evolving dynamic, he argued, imposes on nations the urgent necessity to develop national frameworks and protective mechanisms capable of safeguarding their digital heritage and preserving the symbolic continuity of their historical and cultural identity.
The CASIC Director underscored the need to launch comprehensive research initiatives focusing on the intersection of media transformation, artificial intelligence, and digital memory preservation. He emphasized CASIC’s full readiness to collaborate with academic and cultural institutions in designing AI-powered national documentation projects aimed at archiving, preserving, and valorizing Algeria’s historical legacy. Such initiatives, he noted, would contribute to strengthening digital sovereignty and ensuring Algeria’s autonomous presence in the global digital sphere.
Concluding his intervention, Dr. Bouderbala called for the creation of a National Digital Memory Platform, an integrated and participatory project involving the Ministry of Mujahideen, universities, media organizations, and cultural institutions. This platform, he suggested, would serve as a living and interactive archive employing cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and semantic indexing to document and disseminate Algeria’s historical, cultural, and symbolic heritage in innovative ways.
