Sahrawi Women Take Center Stage as International Delegates Denounce War Crimes, Systematic Repression, and International Inaction

Algiers, Algeria | June 2nd, 2025 — In a human rights conference held in the German capital, Berlin, participants shed light on the grave and systematic violations committed by the Moroccan occupation in Western Sahara, particularly highlighting the plight and resilience of Sahrawi women under occupation.

The event, organized by the “Daughters of Saguia El Hamra” Association, in cooperation with the International Human Rights Committee in Germany and the “Khaimat Tiris” Group, gathered a wide range of rights activists, jurists, and international observers to examine the ongoing repression, political arrests, and violations of international humanitarian law in the occupied territories.

Prominent Sahrawi human rights defender and president of the Sahrawi Organization against Moroccan Occupation (ISACOM), Aminatou Haidar, emphasized during her intervention that the conference tackled the grave crimes faced by the Sahrawi people since the 1975 Moroccan invasion, including systematic repression, political detention, discrimination, starvation, war crimes, and genocidal practices. Haidar underscored that the Moroccan regime’s impunity has been largely enabled by the international community’s double standards and the United Nations’ prolonged silence.

Participants reviewed the historical and legal foundations of the Sahrawi cause, calling into question the legitimacy of the Moroccan presence in Western Sahara. Norwegian lawyer Tone Sørfonn Moe provided a legal analysis of the human rights conditions in the occupied territories, reinforcing calls for international accountability.

Emotional testimonies marked the session, including a moving account from Fatou Mohamed El Hafedh, daughter of former Sahrawi political prisoner Yahya Mohamed El Hafedh, who narrated the enduring suffering of families of detainees and the inhumane conditions under which they live.

In the concluding statement, the forum’s participants urged international organizations to break the silence, pressure Moroccan authorities to lift the siege on occupied Sahrawi territories, and secure the immediate release of political detainees, particularly members of the Gdeim Izik group and the student cohort currently imprisoned.

The conference drew strong and diverse attendance, generating significant engagement and expressions of solidarity with the Sahrawi people’s legitimate struggle for self-determination and independence.
