Betrayal from Within Is Deadlier than Conspiracies from Without: President Tebboune Exposes the Tails of the “Clan” and Failed Officials

Algiers – September 2025 – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s remark on the “traitor within” was far from a passing phrase in his periodic dialogue with the national media. It was a stark warning and a forceful declaration that Algeria’s foremost battle today is not merely against adversaries abroad, but against the betrayers who dwell among us—in positions of power and influence—looting, deceiving, and betraying the trust of both the state and the people.
The remnants of the “clan” persist
Since 2019, Algeria has waged an open confrontation with the remnants of the corrupt network that once pulled the strings of politics and the economy. High-profile trials, the decisive recovery of stolen assets, and crushing blows to monopolistic and corrupt networks were pivotal steps. Yet they have not fully eradicated the roots of the octopus that continues to tamper with Algerians’ livelihoods and with national stability.
Negligent officials who betrayed trust
The gravest dimension of Tebboune’s warning lies in the fact that the “traitor within” may even be a minister or director appointed by the president himself—yet who has proven unworthy of such confidence. Some have failed in managing vital sectors tied directly to citizens’ daily needs; others submitted distorted reports and falsified figures; still others ignored explicit presidential directives. These are not mere shortcomings. This is betrayal of another kind: betrayal that has obstructed development and kept Algeria’s economy hostage to recurring crises.
Corruption embedded in institutions
More alarming still are the reports received by the presidency revealing bribery and corruption festering in sensitive state institutions. Certain officials have turned their offices into private estates, showing no regard for the fate of a nation striving to assert itself regionally and internationally. By privileging their whims above Algeria’s destiny, they become active partners in treason.
President Tebboune opens the battle of results
The president has now set the terms of confrontation: there is no place for an official who equates success with loyalty rather than with achievement; no tolerance for any negligence that threatens the sustenance of citizens or the interests of the nation. His economic and administrative reforms, coupled with a relentless anti-corruption campaign, make clear that the cleansing of the “house” is ongoing, and that the survival of any official depends solely on his ability to serve Algeria, not to serve himself.
The “traitor within” is not a lone figure but an entrenched system: remnants of the corrupt clan, profiteers, negligent officials, and the corrupt heart within institutions. President Tebboune’s battle is nothing less than existential: confronting betrayal from within, which may prove far more perilous than any conspiracy from abroad. For the external enemy is exposed and recognizable, but the stab that comes from within one’s own household is the most painful—and the most dangerous.
