Bread waste during Ramadan: More than 13 million baguettes thrown in garbage cans

ALGIERS- The amount of waste increases by at least 10% during the month of Ramadan in Algeria due to excessive food waste, said the Director General of the National Conservatory of Environmental Training (CNFE), Ms. Malika Bouali.

Thus, 13 million baguettes of bread are thrown away each year during the month of Ramadan, a phenomenon which, according to her, occurs throughout the year.

Mrs. Bouali pleaded for rapid and coercive measures to fight against food waste which has a negative impact on the economy and the environment of the country. She recalled the national awareness campaign against food waste launched by the Ministry of Environment, which aims to rationalize the use of  food resources during the holy month.
