BRICS: Most member countries in favour of Algeria’s membership, accession expected to be decided next Summer

ALGIERS- President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Algeria’s application for BRICS membership was expected to be decided at the group’s meeting next summer, noting that most member countries were in favour of Algeria’s accession.
Speaking to the Qatari news channel Al Jazeera in an interview broadcast on Tuesday night, President Tebboune said that Algeria’s application for BRICS membership was expected to be decided at the group’s meeting next summer, noting that most member countries were in favour of Algeria’s accession particularly in view of the North African country’s important place as the largest Arab and African country, the leading gas exporter in Africa, the fourth largest economy in Africa and free of external debts.
President Tebboune specified that these “factors enable Algeria to join the BRICS”.
He remarked, however, that “a lot of work remains to be done this year to increase GDP and the rate of contribution of the industrial sector to GDP, as well as several economic indicators that we need to reform further to enter the BRICS with our heads held high,” supported President Tebboune.
On the forecasts of the approval of Algeria’s request, President Tebboune affirmed that the countries of the group, such as; “China and Russia have shown themselves favorable in the same way as South Africa, and Brazil headed by President Lula da Silva”.
“This means that the door is wide open”, rejoiced President Tebboune who added: “I believe that the decision to join will be taken during the group’s next meeting slated for this summer”.
South Africa holds the periodic chairmanship of the BRICS during this year. The group’ summit is, noteworthy, expected to take place next summer in South Africa.
