Brussels: The Rif National Party Leads a Mass Demonstration Marking the 104th Anniversary of Rif Independence

Algiers – September 2025 – In the heart of a harsh European winter, under unforgiving weather and thousands of kilometers away from the land of their ancestors, the sons and daughters of the Rif poured into the streets of Brussels with unshakable determination. Their message was unmistakable: the struggle for dignity, freedom, and recognition knows no borders and cannot be silenced by the oppressive machinery of the Moroccan state.
This massive demonstration, marking the 104th anniversary of Rif independence, reflected more than nostalgia for a proud chapter in history—it was a vivid declaration that the Rif question remains alive and unyielding, both at home and in the diaspora. Far from being a symbolic gesture, the march echoed like a thunderclap across European capitals, proving once again that Morocco’s attempts at suffocating the voice of the Rif only strengthen its resonance abroad.
For decades, the Moroccan regime has sought to smother the spirit of the Rif under layers of marginalization, securitization, and state-sponsored repression. From the infamous years of exile and military sieges to the more recent wave of arrests and heavy sentences handed down to peaceful activists of the Hirak, the tactics of intimidation have only deepened the resentment of a people determined not to vanish from history. The burial of Nasser Zefzafi’s father in the Rif, which reignited popular mobilization in the region, revealed once again that no amount of coercion can silence a collective memory steeped in sacrifice and resistance.
The Brussels march laid bare the futility of Morocco’s propaganda, which seeks to delegitimize the Rif cause by painting it as a fringe issue. On the contrary, the demonstrators carried a universal message: the call for freedom, dignity, and an end to systemic marginalization is neither negotiable nor extinguishable. These were not isolated voices of an exiled minority, but the living echo of a people whose demands have outlived repression, prisons, and forced silence.
As banners rose high in the European sky, one truth became undeniable: the Rif cause is internationalized. From Brussels to every corner of the diaspora, the Rif National Party has ensured that the heartbeat of resistance continues to resonate. For the Moroccan state, this reality is a political indictment—proof that its governance by fear and exclusion has failed to erase history or break the will of a people.
What Morocco fears most is precisely what Brussels has demonstrated: that the Rif question is not a relic of the past, but a living struggle carried in the hearts of new generations. One hundred and four years after the proclamation of Rif independence, the descendants of Abd el-Krim continue to remind the world that dignity cannot be bartered, and that true sovereignty belongs to the people—not to the throne that oppresses them.
The Rif diaspora has spoken with clarity: repression breeds defiance, exile breeds solidarity, and silence breeds louder voices. Morocco may brandish its apparatus of coercion, but the Rif spirit has already crossed borders and taken root in global consciousness. It is a cause that refuses erasure, as immortal as the mountains from which it was born.
