ALGIERS- On the occasion of the 61st anniversary of independence and youth day, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria took part in the inauguration of several significant infrastructure projects across the country. Among them, two seawater desalination station projects were launched in Cap Djinet and Fouka.

During his visit to Boumerdes, located east of the capital city, President Tebboune laid the foundation stone for the construction of a seawater desalination station in Cap Djinet. This project, spread across 16 hectares, aims to provide a daily supply of 300,000 cubic meters of drinking water to the residents of Boumerdes and Algiers once operational.

The Cap Djinet desalination station is part of the 2022-2024 emergency program, which focuses on mitigating water scarcity. The program aims to establish five mega desalination stations across various wilayas, including Oran, Bejaïa, El Tarf, Boumerdes, and Tipaza. The government’s objective is to increase the contribution of desalination plants to 60% of the total drinking water consumption by 2030.

Addressing the importance of expanding desalination infrastructure, President Tebboune expressed the need to include all coastal wilayas, including Tizi-Ouzou, which was not previously part of the plan. He emphasized the inclusion of Tizi-Ouzou in the desalination station construction program, suggesting potential locations such as Tigzirt or Azefoun. The President stated, “Desalination stations will be built in all coastal wilayas.”

Following the Cap Djinet project, President Tebboune and his delegation proceeded to Tipaza, where they laid the foundation stone for the Fouka seawater desalination plant. The construction of this facility will further contribute to meeting the growing water demands in the region.

The launch of these two desalination station projects signifies the government’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable supply of drinking water for Algerian citizens.

As the construction progresses, the desalination stations in Cap Djinet and Fouka will not only alleviate water stress but also pave the way for similar initiatives in other wilayas, ultimately benefiting communities across the country.
