Chairman of the Health Committee Highlights Algeria’s Progressive Social Policies at International Population Conference

Beirut, September 15, 2023 – The Chairman of the Health Committee of the People’s National Assembly in Algeria, Nasri Zouhir, delivered a compelling address during the sixth regional review of the International Population Conference in Beirut, shedding light on Algeria’s exemplary social policies and its dedication to healthcare, inclusivity, and support for vulnerable groups.

In his address, Zouhir emphasized several key points that underscore Algeria’s unwavering commitment to its citizens’ well-being and the importance it places on regional cooperation and humanitarian values.

 

   

Social Policies Par Excellence

Zouhir began by highlighting the remarkable social policies pursued by Algeria, emphasizing that they are par excellence. These policies are designed to ensure that every Algerian citizen enjoys a decent quality of life and equal opportunities.

 

Robust Health Coverage

He proudly pointed out that Algeria’s health coverage stands at an impressive 76 percent, as per the World Health Organization’s estimates. This statistic underscores the nation’s dedication to providing accessible healthcare services to its citizens.

Youth Empowerment

Zouhir shared that the percentage of youth representation in the Algerian Parliament has reached a remarkable 50 percent, showcasing the government’s commitment to giving the younger generation a voice in shaping the nation’s future. He also applauded President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s initiative in creating the Supreme Youth Council and the Civil Society Observatory, which have further elevated the status of youth in Algerian society.

 

Legal Safeguards for Vulnerable Groups

The Chairman revealed that Algeria’s Parliament is actively working on enacting 50 laws to protect vulnerable groups, including the elderly, and introducing new legislation related to healthcare. Notably, a specific law is in progress to address the needs of people with special needs, emphasizing the nation’s responsibility towards this group, a matter of significance for all Arab countries.

 

Support for Women

Zouhir also stressed the importance of enacting a law regarding alimony, particularly for divorced women, underscoring Algeria’s dedication to gender equality and women’s rights.

 

Unwavering Social Support

He assured that the Algerian state remains steadfast in its commitment to social support programs, including assistance with basic necessities, support for vulnerable populations, social housing initiatives, free education, and accessible healthcare.

 

Inclusivity and Humanitarian Values

Closing his address, Zouhir emphasized Algeria’s welcoming stance towards immigrants, especially Africans seeking refuge within its borders. He noted that Algeria provides these immigrants with the necessary conditions for a dignified life and comprehensive care, embodying the nation’s commitment to regional cooperation and humanitarian values.
