Child Protection: Cherfi Meets with Quebec Minister Responsible for Social Services

Algiers- Algeria, May 6, 2024 –  The National Delegate for Child Protection, Meriem Cherfi, met with the Quebec Minister responsible for Social Services, Lionel Carmant, during her visit to the Canadian province from April 29th to May 3rd, as stated in a release by the institution.

The discussions between the two parties focused on sharing experiences in promoting child protection and social programs, reflecting a mutual interest in enhancing child welfare practices.

During the meeting, Ms. Cherfi highlighted Algeria’s commitment to social welfare, describing it as “an exemplary social state.” She emphasized that childhood welfare is among the “major political choices” of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s program.

In response, Mr. Carmant praised the alignment between the experiences of Algeria and Quebec, particularly noting Algeria’s constitutionalization of the paramountcy of the child’s interest. He commended the legal, institutional, and budgetary measures implemented by Algeria for child protection. Mr. Carmant expressed his admiration for Algeria’s efforts and expressed his willingness to foster cooperation in this field.

Apart from the meeting with the Quebec Minister, Ms. Cherfi also met with officials from the Ministry of International Relations and Francophonie, discussing matters related to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Additionally, she met with the president of the judicial authority responsible for children and youth at the Palace of Justice.

The visit included several working sessions at various institutions and establishments providing services to children in Quebec. These sessions covered a range of areas including justice, education, health, social services, security companies, and social care centers for children led by civil society actors. The engagements aimed to exchange insights and practices to further enhance child protection efforts.
