Algiers – December 2025 – China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has announced a landmark achievement in Algeria’s vast Western Mining Railway, confirming the completion of track-laying on the PK330 Bridge — Africa’s longest heavy-haul railway bridge. The milestone, finalized on Monday evening, represents a decisive step forward in one of the continent’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
Stretching six kilometers across the sands of Tindouf province, some 1,250 km southwest of Algiers, the PK330 Bridge stands as the most technically demanding segment of the 575-km rail line connecting Béchar to the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit, one of the world’s largest untapped mineral reserves. Its successful advancement underscores the scale and complexity of the engineering effort led jointly by Chinese and Algerian teams.
In this vein, the bridge’s main structure was completed in an impressive one-year timeframe, a pace that has drawn commendation from senior Algerian officials. CRCC further noted that the project has generated more than 7,000 local jobs and provided technical training to over 1,000 Algerian workers, reinforcing its contribution to regional capacity-building and socio-economic development.
The wider Western Mining Railway project encompasses 19 bridges totaling 12.2 km in length, forming a critical logistical corridor intended to link mining hubs, industrial zones, and major ports across southwestern Algeria. As a flagship initiative under the Belt and Road framework, the project is expected to significantly enhance transportation efficiency and stimulate economic growth once operational. ■
