Chinese Medical Delegation: Celebrating Sixty Years of Presence in Algeria

ALGIERS- The Chinese medical delegation’s presence in Algeria spans almost as long as the country’s independence itself. Sixty years of sustained activities in the field were commemorated this Wednesday morning, before a distinguished audience gathered at the Château Neuf Pharmaceutical Industry Institute (Faculty of Medicine of Ben Aknoun) to mark this anniversary.

The event was organized by the Algerian-Chinese Friendship Association, in the presence of its president, Prof. Smaïl Debeche, in collaboration with the Association of Former Directors of University Institutions and Scientific Research, represented by its president, Prof. Nemamcha Mohamed.

Mr. Zhao, the First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Algeria, also graced the occasion with his presence, along with the former President of the Education and Higher Education Reform Commission, as well as the former Rector of the University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB) in Bab Ezzouar, Mr. Benzaghou Benali.

A documentary showcasing the delegation’s activities across the national territory was presented at the opening of the event, followed by a presentation highlighting the delegation’s achievements and concrete cases of medical interventions in the most remote areas of the country.

Prof. Nemamcha provided an overview of the evolution of the Higher Education and Scientific Research sector in Algeria. Additionally, Mr. Lee Xi Fang, the Director of the China-Africa Institute, delivered a presentation on the activities of numerous Chinese medical delegations across the African continent, as well as China’s contribution to African countries in terms of healthcare infrastructure (hospital construction and medical equipment).

Traditional Chinese medicine, particularly acupuncture, was a focal point of the meeting, with a presentation by a Chinese specialist that garnered significant interest from the audience. During the event, copies of the memoirs of the Mujahid and former officer of the Algerian National People’s Army Air Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Mohand Tahar Bouzeghoub, who was part of the first pilot training cohort sent to Wuhan, China, in 1959, were handed over to the First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Algiers.
