Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ramtane LAMAMRA called on Wednesday in New York for the adoption of a common African position in anticipation of COP27, scheduled for next November in Egypt.
On the sidelines of the work of the high-level segment of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Lamamra took part, as representative of the President of the Republic Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in the Summit meeting of the African Union Committee of Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).
This meeting, held under the chairmanship of the new President of the Republic of Kenya William RUTO, organized in preparation for COP27, was an opportunity to discuss Africa’s priorities in the context of the negotiations planned soon under the Convention United Nations Framework on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.
Mr. Lamamra stressed during this summit meeting ”the need for African countries to speak with one voice to advocate for effective and efficient climate action that takes into account Africa’s priorities and its concerns, particularly in connection with repeated attempts to question the validity of the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.
The head of the Algerian diplomacy also called for the strengthening of the role of the African Union in terms of coordinating the activities undertaken by the various African bodies and ensuring that Africa develops and endorses a common position to guide its commitment during the Sharm-el-Sheikh summit in Egypt.
The 27th Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) will take place in Egypt in Sharm-el-Sheikh from November 6 to 18, 2022, it is recalled.
