Algiers, Algeria | June 2nd, 2024 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, presiding over a Council of Ministers meeting this Sunday, has issued several new directives and orientations aimed at bolstering Algeria’s economic development, with a particular emphasis on enhancing the export of Algerian products. These decisions mark a significant step towards a more integrated and efficient approach to economic growth and international trade.
Comprehensive Export Strategy
President Tebboune has mandated the development of a new integrated strategy to ensure the seamless execution of all stages of exporting Algerian products. This directive comes in light of the substantial increase in the number of companies now active in this sector. The President has emphasized the need for a coordinated approach that addresses all facets of the export process, from production to international logistics.
To further solidify this initiative, the President has tasked the government with preparing a scientific and economic study to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of exporting specific Algerian products to international markets. This study will provide critical insights into optimizing export operations and identifying the most promising products for foreign markets.
New Port Management Strategy
In a bid to enhance port operations, President Tebboune has instructed the government to draft a comprehensive vision for a new port management strategy, which will be presented to the Council of Ministers in the near future. This strategy aims to streamline port activities and improve the efficiency of cargo handling and container control.
The President has also directed the Minister of Transport to remain vigilant against any forms of manipulation that could hinder the timely inspection and clearance of containers. He underscored the importance of adhering to strict timelines for unloading ships, enhancing monitoring systems, and expanding capacities to expedite the clearance of port areas.
Supporting Start-Ups in Public Procurement
Addressing the critical issue of start-ups, President Tebboune has ordered the removal of obstacles that hinder the involvement of these young enterprises in public projects. He called for the elimination of outdated practices that discourage young entrepreneurs and impede their progress. The President stressed that the state’s commitment to ensuring the profitability and economic efficiency of start-ups requires adapting to the innovative mindset of the new generation, rather than forcing them to conform to antiquated bureaucratic practices.
In line with this vision, the President has instructed the sector minister to accelerate the establishment of regional agencies dedicated to the financing and monitoring of start-up projects. These agencies will play a crucial role in supporting young entrepreneurs and facilitating their access to public contracts.
Tackling Bureaucracy
A recurring theme in President Tebboune’s directives is the fight against bureaucracy, which he identified as the primary obstacle facing young entrepreneurs. The President reiterated the need to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles and create an environment conducive to innovation and growth. This includes streamlining administrative processes and ensuring that new businesses can navigate the system efficiently and effectively.
The decisions and directives issued by President Tebboune during the Council of Ministers meeting reflect a proactive approach to economic development and a commitment to fostering a more dynamic and competitive business environment in Algeria. By focusing on integrated export strategies, improved port management, and robust support for start-ups, the government aims to drive economic growth and position Algeria as a key player in the global market.
