Immediate Trials Lead to Harsh Sentences as Authorities Reaffirm Zero Tolerance for Tampering with National Exams

Algiers, Algeria | June 18th, 2025 — In a decisive move to safeguard the credibility of Algeria’s national education system, fifteen individuals have been convicted by the tribunals of Laghouat, Aflou, and Aïn Madhi for offenses related to breaching the integrity and disrupting the proper conduct of the June 2025 baccalaureate examinations. The announcements were made this Tuesday by the public prosecutors at each respective tribunal.

The cases were expedited through immediate appearance procedures, underscoring the urgency with which authorities are treating attempts to compromise the most important academic credential in the country. The tribunals handed down firm prison sentences accompanied by significant financial penalties. Sentences ranged from one year of prison with a fine of 200,000 Algerian dinars to six months of prison and a 100,000-dinar fine.

These legal actions follow swift investigations initiated in response to multiple incidents of attempted cheating and leakage of exam materials using modern communication technologies. Such acts, according to judicial authorities, directly undermine the foundations of merit, fairness, and equal opportunity in the educational process.

The public prosecutors from all three jurisdictions reaffirmed that the prosecutions are part of a broader national strategy to eliminate all forms of academic fraud. This is especially critical in the case of unauthorized dissemination of baccalaureate exam questions across social media platforms, a growing threat that has forced the judiciary to take firm and visible action.

The legal framework underpinning these prosecutions is derived from Articles 253 bis 6 and 253 bis 7 of the Algerian Penal Code, which explicitly criminalize acts that compromise the integrity of official examinations.
