The festival, held from August 15 to 22, showcased a selection of captivating Algerian films that have captured the hearts of audiences and filmmakers alike.

Leading the pack is the feature film “The Last Queen”, co-directed by Adila Bendimerad and Damien Honore. This cinematic masterpiece, which competed in the Arab competition section for feature films, narrates a compelling historical saga centered around Queen Zafira, a symbol of unwavering resilience in the face of adversity. Her refusal to abandon her homeland following her husband’s demise, her heroic resistance against Spanish invasion, and her valiant defiance of treacherous plots make her an indomitable figure. The audience was riveted by the meticulous craftsmanship of the movie, particularly the cinematography and the exceptional performances delivered by the cast.

The production of “The Last Queen” was a labor of love that spanned seven years. The directors, Adila Bendimerad and Damien Honore, embarked on an arduous journey to secure funding from a staggering 17 sources. The dedication was evident in every aspect of the film, from the intricately designed sets to the period-accurate costumes. However, the production faced an unexpected hurdle when the global Covid-19 pandemic brought filming to a standstill. Yet, the filmmakers persevered, resulting in a triumphant creation that has captivated the hearts of audiences.

Starring Adela Bendimerad, Daly Salah, Mohamed El Taher Zalaoui, Iman Noel, Ahmed Zeitouni, and other talented actors, “The Last Queen” is emblematic of Algerian cinematic excellence and a celebration of the nation’s rich history.

Another notable entry from Algeria is the short narrative film “Al-Tafafa and Al-Maqnin”, directed by Amir Ben Saifi, which vies for the Best Short Narrative Film award. This evocative piece, set against the backdrop of the Amman International Film Festival, competes among a collection of compelling works from various Arab countries.

Algeria’s cinematic prowess is further showcased through the film “Houria”, directed by Monia Meddour and produced by France and Belgium. This 104-minute masterpiece traces the journey of Houria, an aspiring dancer with dreams of joining the Algerian National Ballet troupe. As she struggles to meet her needs and overcome challenges, her life takes an unexpected turn following a traumatic incident. The film highlights not only the artistic talents of Algeria but also the profound stories that resonate with global audiences.

Additionally, the festival shines a spotlight on “Omar La Fraise”, directed by Elias Belkeddar, which premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival. This film’s inclusion in the Amman festival underscores Algeria’s growing influence on the global cinematic stage.
