Cry of Child Mohammed Al-Daghma

The child Mohammed Al-Daghma, that young Gazan boy who has endured and tasted the bitterness of a harrowing reality after losing his entire family, gave voice—through tears steeped in pain—to the crimes that have besieged him in Gaza.
With heartbreaking simplicity, he described scenes of loss that have come to define his life. How cruel it is to suddenly lose one’s whole family, to be stripped of the people who inhabited your life and shared its every moment. On a personal level, I, too, have passed through moments akin to death, when I was unable to comprehend what had happened or to adapt to that painful truth.
Tears became my constant companion. For a long time, I suffered as though trapped in an inescapable nightmare. Even the sympathy of those around me failed to ease the weight of the shock, which left a deep and indelible scar on my soul.
And yet, I cannot help but feel what this child is living through—his torrential tears expressing, as though he carries within him a mountain of anguish.
As a journalist, my concern is to convey the voices of these desperate children to the world, hoping to serve as a means of shedding light on their suffering. If I possessed the power or the authority, I would never allow these children to endure such inhuman suffering.
If I had strength or armies at my command, I would stand with everything I have to defend them. But I possess only my pen and my journalistic work, through which I strive to transmit their cries and their ongoing torment.
The child Mohammed continues to utter words that tear the heart apart: “I want to die so I can rest.” His small mind can no longer bear the weight of pain and repeated losses. One by one, he loses those close to him— even his young cousin was not spared this agony.
Elsewhere, horrifying scenes repeat themselves: a small child seized by the cold, walking barefoot in search of his family beneath the rubble of death, or perhaps amid the depths of eternal loss.
These stories that I witness with my own eyes are beyond the grasp of reason and impossible for the human conscience to ignore. These are our Arab and Muslim children, the sons and daughters of our nation, whose lives have been utterly destroyed and whose childhood has been assassinated before the eyes of the world—without justice or mercy.
