Cybersecurity at the Core of Algeria’s Digital Sovereignty Strategy: ASSI Leads National Efforts to Safeguard Critical Information Infrastructure and Ensure a Secure Digital Transformation

Algiers, Algeria | May 12th, 2025 —  Algeria has placed the security of its information systems at the forefront of national priorities as the country confronts increasingly complex and evolving cyber threats. This strategic focus comes within the framework of Algeria’s broader ambition to achieve a secure and sovereign digital transformation.

Rabah Nassim Iklef, Head of Cooperation at the Information Systems Security Agency (ASSI) under the Ministry of National Defence, emphasized during a recent presentation the central role of information security in the implementation of Algeria’s national digital transformation strategy. He noted that, like all countries in the digital age, Algeria faces heightened cybersecurity challenges that require urgent, coordinated responses.

In response, Iklef highlighted that since 2020, Algeria has operationalized a comprehensive National Cybersecurity System designed to counter cyber threats and accompany the digital transformation process. This system is tasked with ensuring the protection of national information systems and critical infrastructures, enhancing the resilience of digital networks, and contributing to the creation of a secure digital environment that preserves Algeria’s digital sovereignty.

Iklef detailed a series of strategic projects carried out by ASSI in close collaboration with the High Commission for Digitization, which collectively aim to reinforce Algeria’s cyber resilience. Among the flagship initiatives mentioned are the National Data Center, the National Cloud, the National Reference for Data Governance, and the development of a Sovereign Network Infrastructure.

Moreover, ASSI has spearheaded the establishment of the National Cybersecurity Framework, and contributed to the legal architecture enabling electronic signature and certification, both essential to digital trust.

Additional technical frameworks were also implemented to govern the use of encryption tools and software, while a system for the accreditation of cybersecurity audit service providers has been put into place. Furthermore, the critical function of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) has been institutionalized across state institutions to reinforce internal information security governance.

These efforts represent a cornerstone of Algeria’s vision for a resilient, autonomous, and future-ready digital ecosystem—anchored in robust cybersecurity foundations and sustained by a national commitment to digital sovereignty.
