Decisive Week for Algeria’s Army: Terrorists Neutralized, Narcotraffickers Foiled, and Border Crimes Thwarted

Two terrorists eliminated, two others surrender in the south, massive drug seizures and illegal migration operations dismantled—ANP’s latest weekly report highlights sweeping security successes across national territory

Algiers, Algeria | June 4th, 2025 — In a powerful show of force and coordination, units of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) delivered a series of strategic blows to terrorist networks, criminal syndicates, and smugglers across the country between May 28 and June 3. According to the operational report released on Wednesday by the Ministry of National Defence, two armed terrorists were neutralized in Khenchela, while two others laid down their weapons and surrendered to military authorities in Bordj Badji Mokhtar.

The two slain terrorists were eliminated during a counter-terrorism operation conducted by ANP detachments in the 5th Military Region. In addition to neutralizing the targets, the military recovered two Kalashnikov-type submachine guns and a significant quantity of ammunition. These actions were carried out with precision and underscore the relentless efforts of ANP units in eradicating remnants of terrorism on Algerian soil.

Simultaneously, in a significant development in the 6th Military Region, two terrorists identified as Rikane Brahim alias “Bilel” and Lahad Ibrahim alias “Moussa” turned themselves in to the military authorities in Bordj Badji Mokhtar. They were found in possession of two Kalashnikov-type submachine guns, one automatic pistol, an assortment of ammunition, and various military items. Meanwhile, six individuals suspected of supporting terrorist groups were arrested in separate operations carried out across different provinces.

In its ongoing war against organized crime and narcotrafficking, the ANP, working in close coordination with security services, intercepted 63 drug traffickers and thwarted attempts to smuggle one quintal and 31 kilograms of processed cannabis across Algeria’s western border with Morocco. This comes in tandem with the seizure of an astounding 2,059,240 psychotropic tablets during military operations across multiple regions.

In the fight against illegal mining and smuggling, particularly in the southern regions of Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Guezzam, and Djanet, ANP detachments apprehended 220 individuals involved in illicit gold mining and smuggling activities. The operations also led to the confiscation of 50 vehicles, 281 electric generators, 183 jackhammers, five metal detectors, large quantities of raw gold and stones, explosive materials, and detonation equipment.

Furthermore, 13 additional individuals were arrested, and ANP forces seized 11 hunting rifles, over 11,000 liters of smuggled fuel, 18 quintals of contraband tobacco, and 39 tonnes of food products meant for illegal speculation and cross-border trafficking.

The ANP’s maritime units also played a key role in securing the nation’s coastlines. The Coast Guard intercepted numerous attempts at illegal migration, rescuing 323 individuals who were attempting to cross the Mediterranean in homemade boats. In parallel, 381 irregular migrants of various nationalities were apprehended across Algeria in joint operations aimed at dismantling illegal migration networks.

This week’s comprehensive security sweep reflects the unwavering commitment of the Algerian People’s National Army to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity, dismantling terrorist remnants, curbing cross-border criminality, and preserving public order. Through precise, intelligence-driven operations, the ANP continues to fulfill its constitutional mandate to protect Algeria from all threats, internal and external.
