Derbal: “President Tebboune Prioritizes Securing Water Resources and Enhancing Their Quality”

ALGIERS, March 2nd, 2026 — Algeria is advancing its strategic efforts to secure and improve water resources in the southwestern region, highlighted by a series of major hydraulic projects in Tindouf, Minister of Water Resources Taha Derbal announced on Monday.
Speaking during the launch of a new demineralization plant with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters per day, Derbal emphasized that these structural projects reflect the political will of the Algerian authorities, spearheaded by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who “places particular importance on securing water resources and improving their quality.”
The minister noted that the project aligns with presidential instructions to accelerate the reinforcement and protection of water supplies while enhancing water quality for citizens. “This significant structural project constitutes a qualitative achievement for the wilaya,” Derbal stated, “as it will reduce water salinity and improve overall quality.”
The implementation of the project will be entrusted to two major national public companies: Cosider, responsible for constructing the infrastructure and facilities, and Forimex, tasked with drilling wells and mobilizing new water resources, leveraging its technical expertise. Together, they aim to deliver a project that strengthens both capacity and service quality.
Supporting Agricultural Activity
Derbal added that the project coincides with the ongoing expansion of the current Tindouf demineralization plant, increasing production capacity by 5,000 cubic meters per day to reach 20,000 cubic meters. He emphasized that these initiatives demonstrate the authorities’ focused attention on water resource management in the region. “These structural projects provide effective support to the public water service,” he noted, “not only by increasing distribution volumes but also by improving water quality, ensuring citizens have access to safe and sufficient water.”
Additionally, the minister highlighted the launch of a study for a separate project involving water transfer to the southwest, scheduled for completion by early summer, which will form the basis for future investment projects. This comprehensive approach goes beyond potable water supply, extending support to agriculture by providing the necessary water resources to expand arable land, reflecting Tindouf’s significant agricultural potential.
Strategic Water Transfers and Infrastructure Development
Derbal confirmed that strict instructions have been issued to all implementing companies to expedite work and reduce delivery times, ensuring that projects come online as soon as possible to enhance public water services and fulfill the president’s commitments. The visit also included the groundbreaking of a potable water pumping complex in the El Hikma district, with strict adherence to national and international technical standards emphasized.
The minister further inspected wastewater sanitation projects in the El Wifak and El Wiaam areas, part of a complementary program allocated to Tindouf by President Tebboune. He oversaw the commissioning of potable water systems at the Mustapha Benboulaïd border post and the Tindouf Free Trade Zone. Additionally, he reviewed studies for water transfer from the Blad Lemdna and Aïn El Barka catchment fields to Gara Djebilet and supervised the handover of a mobile laboratory to the local unit of the Algerian Water Agency.
