Diego Mellado: “Algeria Plays a Pivotal Role in Strengthening Africa-Europe Cooperation”

Algiers – December 2025 – Algeria is increasingly recognized as a critical bridge between Africa and Europe, fostering economic diversification, industrial development, and strategic collaboration, according to Diego Mellado, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) Mission in Algeria. Mellado made these remarks on Wednesday during a reforestation initiative held in the Baïnem Forest in Algiers, organized by the EU Mission in cooperation with representatives of the African Union (AU) and the Directorate General of Forests (DGF).
Describing Algeria as “an essential link connecting Europe and Africa to advance the welfare of both continents,” Mellado highlighted the country’s strategic position as a hub for enhancing industrial development, expanding economic diversification, and promoting sustainable cooperation across multiple sectors.
“The EU is determined to strengthen its partnership with Algeria, particularly in advancing economic diversification, infrastructure development, trade, investment, energy, political cooperation, security, and migration management,” Mellado asserted. He further emphasized Algeria’s role as a Mediterranean, African, and Arab partner, positioning it as a gateway for broader continental cooperation.
Highlighting untapped opportunities, Mellado stressed that Algeria’s tourism sector holds significant potential, with exceptional prospects for sustainable growth and development. Complementing this perspective, Djamel Touahria, Director-General of Forests, underlined the critical importance of reforestation initiatives in protecting vegetation cover and called for intensified awareness campaigns targeting younger generations.
The event brought together representatives from the EU and AU in Algeria, alongside ambassadors from several European and Arab countries, underscoring the shared commitment to fostering regional cooperation and sustainable development.
