Digital Treachery and Manufactured Lies: From Sifaoui’s Betrayal to the Orchestrated Rumors on Buses, Cars, and Food Prices

Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria today stands face-to-face with an unprecedented wave of digital warfare, where rumors are no longer idle whispers but carefully engineered weapons aimed at eroding trust, destabilizing institutions, and sowing collective doubt.

In recent weeks, traitors and mercenaries of disinformation have escalated their tactics, moving beyond the crude rumor into the realm of sophisticated AI-driven deception and deepfake propaganda. At the forefront of this campaign is the disgraced figure Mohamed Sifaoui, a self-proclaimed “journalist” turned notorious agent of foreign agendas, who has once again revealed his allegiance not to truth, but to treachery.

Weaponizing Lies Against the Nation

Sifaoui’s latest fabrication — a deepfake targeting President Abdelmadjid Tebboune — marked a dangerous escalation. This was no amateur rumor. It was a premeditated act of betrayal, a deliberate attempt to undermine the Head of State and destabilize national confidence, orchestrated with the cynicism of someone who long ago abandoned his homeland for the payroll of hostile powers.

Such fabrications are not isolated. They fit into a pattern of systematic disinformation that has weaponized tragedies, consumer anxieties, and political symbolism:

  • The distorted recycling of former Industry Minister Sifi Ghrieb’s statements, maliciously twisted to portray him as opposing vehicle imports, when in fact he had initiated reforms to protect consumers and clean up corruption in the automotive sector.

  • The resurrection of the Oued El-Harrach bus tragedy, this time with a fabricated rumor about the driver’s death, designed to reignite public anger and exploit grief.

  • The false claims of milk price hikes, spread in an attempt to spark panic over essential goods and weaken public trust in economic governance.

Each case demonstrates the same logic: exploit sensitive issues — transport, consumer goods, national tragedies, and political leadership — to erode cohesion and amplify frustration.

Organized Betrayal, Not Random Gossip

What is unfolding is not a spontaneous flurry of “mistakes,” but a calculated campaign of information warfare. Fake pages usurp the visual identities of credible Algerian media outlets, forging logos and mimicking layouts to deceive readers. Digital manipulation has matured into a full-blown security threat, coordinated by shadowy networks with political objectives that extend beyond Algeria’s borders.

Even hostile foreign channels, usually quick to exploit Algerian affairs, refused to circulate Sifaoui’s absurd deepfake, recognizing that the fraud was too grotesque to survive scrutiny. This only underscores the recklessness — and desperation — of those who continue to wage a cowardly war through lies.

A National Duty to Confront Digital Subversion

The deliberate fabrication of rumors about the President, about national tragedies, or about consumer prices is not “freedom of expression.” It is sabotage. It is digital treason, orchestrated with the clear aim of severing the bond of trust between the Algerian people and their state.

Algeria can no longer treat disinformation as a passing nuisance. It must be understood for what it is: a hybrid warfront where rumors are weapons as dangerous as bullets.

The response cannot be left to institutions alone. It requires:

  • A national media security strategy that unites state authorities, professional journalism, and civil society.

  • A collective digital literacy effort to immunize citizens against manipulation.

  • A systematic unmasking of traitors like Sifaoui, exposing their foreign sponsors and stripping away the last vestiges of credibility they pretend to hold.

Algeria’s enemies have chosen the path of lies because they cannot defeat the nation through truth. By exploiting tragedies, twisting words, and faking images, they hope to manufacture chaos where none exists.

But the antidote lies in national vigilance. Every citizen who double-checks a story before sharing it, every reader who turns to official sources instead of shadowy “pages,” and every Algerian who rejects the whispers of traitors, becomes a soldier in this fight.

As the nation strengthens its institutions and modernizes its economy, it must also fortify its digital frontlines. Against treachery, there is truth. Against rumor, there is awareness. And against cowardice, there is the resilience of a people who refuse to be deceived.
