ALGIERS- In recent weeks, Algeria has embarked on an ambitious diplomatic redeployment, with Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf at the helm, showcasing a flurry of foreign visits. This dynamic diplomatic activity signifies not a retreat, but rather a vigorous reassertion of Algeria’s central and neutral positions. In a world characterized by significant upheavals, Algeria recognizes the imperative to reaffirm its stance and, when necessary, adopt decisive postures.

One such instance necessitating a decisive approach is the ongoing crisis in Niger, which has repercussions on international relations and has led to divergent opinions on its resolution. Algeria’s political initiative, promoted by Attaf, has garnered positive responses and support, even as certain capitals with limited interests attempt to obstruct it.

Major global capitals, including Moscow, Washington, Beijing, Rome, Bonn, and others, have thrown their weight behind Algeria’s six-point plan for resolving the political crisis, which advocates a political solution over military intervention.

However, Algeria’s diplomatic strategy extends beyond this crisis, encompassing various regional and continental issues. It plays the bilateral card to gain support from strategic partners while also engaging with regional and international organizations.

The revival of the Non-Aligned Movement marked the beginning of Algeria’s resurgence on the international stage. The Algiers summit of the Arab League served as a crucial catalyst for unity and decision-making within the organization.

Moreover, Algeria has secured a place for the African Union within the G20, and it continues to advocate for its own membership in the United Nations. Algeria’s advocacy efforts are set to continue during its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

During his travels and diplomatic engagements, Ahmed Attaf has worked diligently to strengthen bilateral cooperation and strategic dialogues. He has successfully positioned Algeria as a significant voice on international matters, including crises, political conflicts, security concerns, and illegal immigration, especially in the Sahel and the Middle East.

From London to Washington, Beijing to Moscow, Rome to Riyadh, Lisbon to Bonn, Ankara to Budapest, Attaf has found receptive audiences echoing Algeria’s vision, applauding the constancy of its neutral stance. Algeria has emerged as a pivotal player in the competition for a slice of the “African pie” due to the continent’s burgeoning economic potential. Notably, Turkey and the United States view Algeria as a vital partner for economic and security reasons, as well as in the fight against terrorism.

It is evident that Algeria, once momentarily constrained by internal challenges, had to embark on this explanatory campaign to reaffirm its positions and take a proactive role in resolving crises and conflicts, leveraging its recognized experience and expertise in mediation. The primary challenge remains the European Union, particularly Spain, with whom Algeria’s diplomatic relations have reached a precarious juncture.

During Attaf’s visit to Hungary, discussions included the pressing issue of breaking the deadlock with the European Union. Attaf called upon his Hungarian counterpart, whose country assumed the EU presidency, to initiate negotiations to thaw the relations. As a sign of progress, Hungary’s President, Catalin Novak, is scheduled to visit Algeria, as announced by Attaf. This consistent pace of diplomatic efforts is expected to continue into the coming year, solidifying Algeria’s renewed role as a key player in global affairs.
