𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓕𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – Djamaâ El Djazaïr is marking, this Tuesday, the second anniversary of its opening under the slogan “For an authentic national reference”, reaffirming its role as a central institution in promoting a balanced national religious discourse and safeguarding societal cohesion.
At the heart of this commemoration lies the conviction that a nationally grounded, moderate religious discourse constitutes a fundamental component of national security, as it shields society from the perils of extremism. This mission, Djamaâ El Djazaïr assumes with heightened awareness of the contemporary digital, cultural and cross-border challenges shaping today’s religious and intellectual landscape.
Addressing the ceremony in the presence of several ministers, senior state officials and diplomats, the Rector of Djamaâ El Djazaïr, Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, stressed that the Algerian state, at its highest level, has grasped that security is not confined to borders alone, but begins with awareness and consciousness. Sovereignty, he noted, is not preserved by force alone, but is consolidated through knowledge and an authentic, balanced national religious discourse capable of protecting society from alienation and extremist deviation.
Confronting Digital and Cultural Challenges
Al Kacimi underlined that Djamaâ El Djazaïr was conceived as a pillar of serene national construction, operating in harmony with Algeria’s religious, scientific and cultural institutions. He highlighted that the challenges facing religious discourse today are no longer traditional, but digital, cultural and intellectual, transcending national borders. The responsibility of the institution, he stressed, is not to repeat inherited formulas, but to produce a discourse that understands, influences and speaks to contemporary society in its own language, without sacrificing depth or severing ties with its roots.
A Space for High-Level Training and Knowledge
Looking ahead, the Rector emphasised that Djamaâ El Djazaïr’s ambition is to remain a space of high-level training, rigorous scientific research and balanced civilisational dialogue, with the aspiration of becoming a global Islamic beacon—Arab, African and Mediterranean. He underlined that the institution must reflect the image of Islam as known in Algeria: an Islam of knowledge and work, of zaouïas and schools, of resistance and construction, and of a unifying national reference.
Reflecting on the institution’s journey, Al Kacimi noted that two years are sufficient to test a vision, assess a methodology and evaluate the capacity to move from symbolism to institutional function. Since its inauguration, he said, Djamaâ El Djazaïr has sought to live up to this responsibility, supported by the trust of the state, strengthened by Algeria’s religious and civilisational heritage, and open to its regional and international environment. The achievements recorded over this period, he added, are the product of a national vision rooted in moderation.
Strengthening Academic and Institutional Cooperation
As part of its openness to its environment, Djamaâ El Djazaïr marked the occasion with the signing of several cooperation agreements. Among them are accords between the National Higher School of Islamic Sciences “Dar Al Quran” of Djamaâ El Djazaïr and the International Islamic University of Malaysia, as well as Ez-Zitouna University of Tunis. These agreements, Al Kacimi stressed, go beyond formal academic cooperation, embodying a shared awareness that the future of Islamic sciences is built through complementarity and the exchange of experience, rather than isolation or rupture.
Additional agreements were also signed with the National Radio Corporation, alongside the reception of a library comprising more than 30,000 titles, donated by the Saudi scholar Sheikh Mahmoud Ibn Mohamed Al Mokhtar Al-Shanqiti.
The commemoration activities, held from 2 to 4 February, include a wide range of cultural and intellectual events across Djamaâ El Djazaïr’s various spaces, notably four exhibitions dedicated to multiple themes. Together, they reaffirm the institution’s role as a cornerstone of Algeria’s religious, intellectual and cultural landscape, anchored in moderation and open dialogue.
The Great Mosque of Algiers: A Fusion of Modernity and Tradition
The Great Mosque of Algiers stands as a testament to both modern architectural marvels and traditional Islamic aesthetics. Classified as the largest mosque in Africa and the third-largest in the world, after Masdjid Al-Haram in Mecca and Masdjid Al-Nabawi in Medina, it embodies the fusion of modernity and tradition.
Designed with a modernist approach, the mosque’s interior features Andalusian influences, geometric architecture, and intricate decorations in wood, marble, and alabaster. The walls are adorned with six kilometers of Arabic calligraphy from the Quran, complemented by turquoise prayer mats.
Spanning 27.75 hectares, the mosque’s prayer hall alone covers over 2 hectares, accommodating up to 120,000 worshippers. The hall, resembling a massive cube, stands approximately 22.5 meters high, with a dome soaring to 70 meters at its apex. All religious elements, including the Qibla wall, Mihrab, and Minbar, blend seamlessly into the modern aesthetic of the hall.
One of the most striking features of the mosque is its minaret, standing at a staggering height of 265 meters, making it the tallest in the world. Equipped with elevators, the minaret offers panoramic views of Algiers and the Bay of Algiers, resembling a skyscraper in dimension and function.
The mosque complex extends beyond religious functions, encompassing cultural and educational buildings. These include a house for Quran studies, an Islamic cultural center, a library housing a million books, lecture halls, museums, research centers, and more. These facilities position the mosque as not only a center of religious activity but also a hub for social, cultural, and educational events.
Furthermore, the mosque’s outdoor square, administrative headquarters, underground car park, green spaces, and shops contribute to its functionality and significance in Algerian society. Notably, the mosque boasts a highly effective anti-seismic system, capable of mitigating over 70% of earthquake forces.
The inauguration of the Algiers Mosque represents a significant milestone in Algeria’s religious and cultural landscape, symbolizing the country’s commitment to modernity, tradition, and societal advancement.
