Currently serving as the Director of the Precision Immunology Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, Dr. Merad has emerged as one of the world’s foremost authorities in cancer immunology. Her research has fundamentally advanced understanding of the immune system’s role in fighting tumors, earning her international acclaim and prestigious scientific accolades.

Speaking at the event, the Algerian Consul General described Dr. Merad as “a beacon of inspiration for Algerian women and scientists worldwide,” adding that her legacy is “a testament to the excellence and resilience of Algerian minds contributing meaningfully to humanity’s greatest scientific challenges.”

A statement released by the Algerian Consulate emphasized that the tribute to Dr. Merad was “a well-deserved recognition of a stellar academic journey and a life devoted to pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge.” The statement added that this honor was aligned with the Consulate’s commitment to promoting the achievements of Algerian expatriates and fostering strong ties with the Algerian scientific community abroad.

Born in Algiers in 1969 to a family of medical professionals, Dr. Merad began her medical studies at the University of Algiers before moving to France, where she attended Paris Diderot University. She later completed her advanced scientific training at Stanford University in the United States—marking the beginning of a remarkable transatlantic scientific journey.

At Mount Sinai, she not only heads the Precision Immunology Institute but also serves as a full professor of medicine. Her cutting-edge research has been instrumental in reshaping the global landscape of immunotherapy and continues to guide the development of novel cancer treatments.

Dr. Merad’s influence extends beyond the lab. She is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and currently serves as Vice President of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS).
