Düsseldorf Court Convicts Moroccan Agent: Rif National Party Denounces State-Sponsored Espionage in Europe

Algiers – September 2025 – In a landmark ruling, the Düsseldorf Regional Court has convicted Moroccan national Youssef El-Asrouti on charges of espionage against Rif activists in Europe, a verdict hailed by the Rif National Party (RNP) as both historic and revelatory.
In a statement, the RNP welcomed the ruling as a long-overdue recognition of the threats posed by Morocco’s clandestine networks operating on European soil. The party described the conviction as a direct blow to Rabat’s apparatus of repression, which it accused of orchestrating systematic campaigns of intimidation, infiltration, and harassment targeting the Rif diaspora.
Drawing parallels with the infamous Mehdi Ben Barka affair, the RNP stressed that the case confirms a historical continuity of Moroccan state practices — “a state tradition of extraterritorial repression that disregards borders, sovereignty, and fundamental rights.”
The party condemned these illegal acts in the strongest possible terms, branding them not only as an assault on individual freedoms but as a flagrant violation of European sovereignty.
The RNP further held the Moroccan regime fully responsible for any attack against the safety or integrity of its activists, whether in Europe or in the Rif homeland. It urged European governments and institutions to adopt a clear stance, labeling Morocco a “non-trustworthy actor” and a “direct threat to democratic stability.”
The party called for immediate investigations into repeated Moroccan interventions within the EU, citing:

For the RNP, the Düsseldorf ruling demonstrates not only the independence and seriousness of the German judiciary, but also the capacity of European courts to uphold the principles of justice and protect fundamental freedoms against foreign subversion.
Concluding its statement, the party reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending the legitimate rights of the Rif people, denouncing what it called the illegal annexation of the Rif, and pledging to continue exposing the Moroccan state’s violations on both European and international stages.
“The message is now clear,” the communiqué declared. “No regime, however entrenched in repression, can silence the Rif cause — not in the Rif, not in Europe, not anywhere.”
