Education and Healthcare Professionals in Morocco Announce Strikes and Protests

ALGIERS- In a unified stance against what they perceive as unjust labor practices, the National Coordination of Contracted Teachers and Support Staff in Morocco has declared their readiness to coordinate with various education sector entities for a comprehensive and organized movement. They aim to forge a united front and integrate their struggles with other elements of the ongoing educational movement.

The Coordination, following its national council meeting on January 2nd, released a statement outlining their plans for a work strike on January 3rd, 4th, and 5th, accompanied by a two-hour work stoppage on January 2nd and 6th. They also expressed their rejection of the 38-hour work week and a boycott of additional tasks outlined in Ministerial Decree 064.22.

Concerning support staff, the Coordination announced a refusal to work 38 hours and a boycott of all tasks added by Ministerial Decree 064.22.

Simultaneously, nurses affiliated with the Independent Nurses’ Union regional offices in Marrakech, Taourirt, Fes, Rabat, Khénifra, and Beni Mellal have declared their intention to engage in protests, strikes, and marches during the first two weeks of January. They voice dissatisfaction with what they perceive as the government’s neglect of their demands and promise to initiate a nursing movement to address the longstanding issues facing their profession.

Abdullah Mirouche, a member of the National Office of the Independent Nurses’ Union, highlighted the 15-day period of strikes and protests starting in January. Nurses demand wage justice, with a clear call for a net salary increase of no less than 3000 dirhams.

The healthcare professionals are also seeking compensation for occupational hazards, recognition of student internships, and the preservation of professional gains within the public sector. They stress the need for the Ministry of Health to change its approach and implement sound policies to rectify past mistakes that nurses have endured for decades.

Morouche emphasized that they are at the beginning of a nursing movement, signaling a readiness to escalate their actions if the government fails to respond to their just and reasonable demands. The nurses insist on addressing the systemic exclusion they have faced over the years and express openness to dialogue with the government, with the outcome determining the course of their future actions.
