ALGIERS- In a massive display of discontent, approximately 100,000 teachers participated in a rally organized by the education unions on Thursday, December 21st, in Rabat, Morocco. The march commenced from the Moroccan Parliament building at eleven in the morning, making its way towards the Ministry of Education headquarters.
Protesters, comprising educators from across the nation, raised slogans demanding the overhaul of the fundamental system, improvements in salaries, and a rejection of the government’s approach to managing the ongoing crisis in the education sector since October.
The demonstration, orchestrated by the Unified Coordination of Teaching Staff and Support Frameworks and the National Coordination of Secondary School Teachers, serves as a resounding message against the policies of the government and its allies within various unions.
Sources from the coordinating committees assert that this protest by educators is a direct response to the government and affiliated unions attempting to undermine and discredit the teachers’ protests and strikes. The statement emphasizes that the response to those seeking to undermine the teachers’ protests and denigrate them will come at the appropriate time.
Simultaneously, thousands of teachers, both male and female, from all corners of Morocco, flocked to Rabat to partake in the protest against the Ministry of Education. Similar protests unfolded in front of the academies in various Moroccan cities, all echoing the same demand: the annulment of the fundamental system and the integration of contract-based teachers into the civil service.
In a related development, the preparatory committee for the establishment of a new teachers’ union named “Moroccan Education Union” (S.E.M) announced the initiation of its outreach efforts. This effort involves connecting with regional preparatory committees throughout the kingdom to organize the National Founding Conference of the education union. The committee aims to designate two conference representatives for each regional directorate before the conference date.
The preparatory committee’s statement highlighted the urgent need for this new union in response to the deteriorating state of the education sector in Morocco. It cited the exhaustion of traditional educational union bodies in fulfilling their roles effectively and the disillusionment of educators with the manipulated sectorial dialogue. Additionally, the committee emphasized the government’s failure to address critical issues affecting the education community, such as the fundamental system for employees of the Ministry of National Education and Training in Morocco, the contract file, and pension matters.
The committee asserted that the reasons prompting the formation of this new educational union include the delayed and evasive responses of government authorities to the demands of educators. Despite the prolonged strike, spanning October, November, and December 2023, educators have yet to see satisfactory resolutions that would meet their demands for better social and financial conditions.
As Morocco grapples with this sustained education crisis, the educators’ voices, amplified by mass protests and the emergence of a potential new union, underscore the urgency for comprehensive and effective measures to address the grievances of the education sector in the country.
