Bengrina Warns Suspension of TV Channels Risks Undermining Algeria’s Media Freedom

Algiers, Algeria |  In a public statement, the El Bina El Watani Movement, signed by its president Abdelkader Bengrina, has denounced the recent punitive measures taken against several Algerian television channels, describing them as disproportionate and deeply harmful to the national media landscape.

The movement stressed that while it does not contest the principle of accountability in journalism, the abrupt suspension of entire broadcasting platforms constitutes, in its view, an excessive and counterproductive decision. According to Bengrina, such sanctions risk undermining freedom of expression, damaging the credibility of the Algerian press, and stifling the pluralistic media environment that the country has been striving to consolidate in recent years.

The statement underscored that mistakes in the media sector must be addressed through proportionate measures that correct rather than eradicate, warning against punitive approaches that may lead to self-censorship and weaken the public’s trust in national institutions. The movement argued that instead of applying overly severe sanctions, efforts should focus on professional training, regulatory reinforcement, and a constructive partnership between state bodies and media organizations.

Bengrina further reminded that media, despite their shortcomings, play an indispensable role in shaping public opinion, promoting national cohesion, and amplifying Algeria’s voice abroad. For this reason, the El Bina El Watani Movement called upon the authorities to reconsider such decisions and adopt solutions that protect both journalistic integrity and the principles of responsible freedom.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the movement’s unwavering commitment to defending a free, professional, and responsible press, one that upholds ethical standards while serving as a pillar of democracy and national sovereignty.
