Algiers, Algeria | May 11th, 2025 —  This month, Algeria solemnly commemorates the National Day of Memory, a landmark occasion enshrined by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in 2020 to eternalize one of the nation’s most indelible chapters—the May 8, 1945 massacres. This year marks the 80th anniversary of those horrific atrocities, in which the brutal colonial power unleashed unthinkable violence upon an unarmed population seeking freedom. The massacres of May 8 were not merely a tragic episode—they ignited an awakening, a surge of revolutionary consciousness that would culminate nine years later in the glorious November 1st, 1954 Revolution. That uprising, hailed as the greatest liberation movement of the 20th century, confronted the colonial machine with unshakable will, unparalleled courage, and a fervent yearning for emancipation. For seven and a half years, the Algerian people defied the occupier with unmatched heroism, ultimately securing their rightful independence through resilience, sacrifice, and national unity.

As the nation bows in reverence to the memory of its righteous martyrs, this commemorative day becomes a beacon of inspiration for every Algerian to march forward—proud of their past, conscious of their duty, loyal to their heritage, and committed to safeguarding the sacred legacy of their forefathers. It is a call to carry forth the values of honor, dignity, and sacrifice into the fabric of the New Algeria—an Algeria that is strong, sovereign, and rising steadily on the foundations of peace, stability, and genuine development across all sectors.

Today’s undeniable achievements—so often ignored by the envious, the bitter, or the conspiring—are not the product of chance. They are the outcome of relentless effort, guided by sincerity, patriotism, and an unshakable commitment to national interest. They are the fruit of a deep-seated belief in the sacred responsibility of nation-building. In this spirit, the construction of the New Algeria must now, more than ever, be anchored in unity, resolve, and the mobilization of all patriotic energies. President Tebboune, in his address marking this 80th anniversary, aptly stated: “Sovereign, proud, and triumphant, Algeria builds the foundations of its present and forges ahead with steadfast determination toward sustainable development, driven by the will of its loyal patriots, working tirelessly to elevate its regional and global standing—guided by a historic legacy that instills pride in a people forged in courage and in the unwavering pursuit of justice and liberty.”

The President made it unequivocally clear that Algeria will never allow its national memory to be diminished or denied: “Faithful to the legacy of resistance and sacrifice, rooted in the principles of November, and honoring the eternal message of the martyrs, Algeria will never accept its memory to be subject to erasure or historical revisionism.”

Indeed, a close observer of Algeria’s heroic path to sovereignty will recognize that its triumph was made possible through unity, cohesion, and unwavering solidarity. It was the consolidation of ranks and the unwavering pursuit of a single goal—recovering national sovereignty at any cost—that enabled this victory. That sovereignty now demands vigilant protection by all Algerians, both civilians and soldiers, against any threat to our immutable values or territorial and popular unity.

This duty of vigilance is more pressing than ever in a global context where the enemies of Algeria resort to increasingly insidious tactics. These include psychological warfare, misinformation, and destabilizing propaganda campaigns. Such dangers were underscored by Army General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, during his recent visit to the Fourth Military Region. He warned: “It is imperative to combat the dangerous use of destructive and misleading propaganda, particularly given the explosive growth of communication technologies, social media platforms, and digital tools. Fake news and information manipulation have become lethal weapons serving dubious political agendas.”

He further declared that “countering slanderous campaigns aimed at tarnishing Algeria’s image is a patriotic duty that falls upon every loyal Algerian. This can only be achieved through heightened awareness, unwavering vigilance, and a profound sense of national responsibility to foil these vile plots that threaten the security, stability, and territorial integrity of our nation.”

In conclusion, no matter the scale of conspiracies or malicious schemes hatched against Algeria, the oath sworn by its sons—to follow the noble path of their forefathers—shall remain an unshakable creed. Their only ambition is to ensure that this nation forever upholds its dignity, cherishes its eternal freedom, and commands the respect it rightly deserves. This sacred mission is embodied today by the People’s National Army, heir to the National Liberation Army, which embraces this monumental responsibility with devotion, discipline, and loyalty. The Army continues to evolve in all its dimensions, firmly anchored in the principles of the November Revolution and the sublime values for which our valiant ancestors gave their lives.
