ALGIERS- Amidst growing scrutiny, the relationship between Pedro Sanchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, and Moroccan authorities has come under intense speculation. Following Sanchez’s highly criticized visit to Morocco, during which he refrained from endorsing the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara, questions surrounding his conduct have emerged, prompting Spanish newspaper El Mundo to delve into the matter.

In an interview with renowned Spanish journalist and analyst Federico Jiminez Losantos, El Mundo raised concerns regarding potential findings on the phones of Pedro Sanchez and his wife, Bégonia. Losantos, known for his outspoken nature, did not mince words, suggesting that serious revelations may have been uncovered through the use of Pegasus spyware, deployed by Moroccan authorities with support from the United Arab Emirates.

The inquiry stems from suspicions surrounding the dissolution of Spain’s anti-corruption unit, a move that has been met with widespread controversy. Critics argue that Sanchez’s administration has been compromised by Moroccan interests, potentially influenced by corrupt practices and coercion.

The speculation extends to the possibility of undisclosed scandals, which could explain Sanchez’s perceived deference to Moroccan authorities. Reports suggest substantial kickbacks involving the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), to which Sanchez belongs, further complicating the political landscape.

Recent claims circulated in Moroccan media triumphantly assert that Sanchez capitulated to Moroccan demands, relinquishing control of Western Saharan airspace in exchange for sovereignty over the border posts of Ceuta and Melilla. However, investigations reveal these assertions to be unfounded fabrications, debunked by seasoned journalist Ignacio Cembrero, renowned for his fair and critical analysis of Moroccan-Spanish relations and the Western Sahara issue.

Opposition parties, notably the People’s Party (PP), have called for Sanchez to address the controversy in Parliament, demanding accountability for his questionable actions during the Morocco visit.

As speculation continues to swirl, the implications of Moroccan influence on Spanish politics remain a subject of intense debate, raising concerns about the integrity of democratic institutions and the potential erosion of national sovereignty.
