Electronic Payments in Algeria Surge by 46% in 2025, Driving Digital Financial Transformation

The total value of electronic payments—including point-of-sale (POS) terminals, online transactions, and mobile payments—reached 939 billion DZD in 2025, compared to 643.8 billion DZD in 2024, reflecting a profound shift toward digital financial practices.

Explosive Growth of Online Payments

Online payments experienced an unprecedented surge of 179%, totaling 145 billion DZD across more than 27 million transactions. December 2025 alone saw a record 3.6 million transactions worth 65.27 billion DZD, fueled primarily by the first installment of the AADL 3 housing program, conducted exclusively online.

Sector-wise, telecommunications dominated online payments, with over 12 million transactions, followed by administrative services (7.6 million), service providers (3.6 million), and electricity and water bills (1.8 million). Since the launch of online payments in 2016, the cumulative number of digital transactions has exceeded 84 million, with over half completed in the last two years, highlighting accelerated adoption.

Rising Transaction Value and E-Commerce Integration

The average value per online transaction increased from 1,180 DZD in 2020 to nearly 5,400 DZD in 2025, reflecting higher-value e-commerce activity and growing public trust. The simplification of merchant integration procedures contributed to rapid onboarding, bringing the total number of web merchants to 644 by end-2025—a 26.27% increase from 2024.

POS Terminals: Wider Adoption and Higher Value Transactions

Transactions via POS terminals doubled to 89.5 billion DZD, while the total number of devices rose from 68,140 in December 2024 to 78,774 in December 2025, a 15.61% increase. Average transaction values climbed from 6,000 DZD in 2020 to over 9,000 DZD in 2025. Peak activity occurred in May, coinciding with Aïd El-Adha sheep sales, demonstrating the growing integration of POS payments into everyday life.

Mobile Payments: P2P and QR Codes Driving Growth

Mobile intra-bank QR code transactions rose 19%, reaching 69.3 million operations worth 57.3 billion DZD. P2P transfers also expanded sharply, with 47.5 million transactions (+31%) totaling 647.4 billion DZD, underlining the increasing reliance on mobile solutions for peer-to-peer fund transfers.

DZ Mob Pay: Algeria’s Interbank Mobile Payment Launch

2025 also saw the official launch of DZ Mob Pay, the country’s interbank mobile payment service. Supported by the national mobile switch operational since June 2024, the service currently includes 7 pilot banks, with gradual expansion planned. By December 2025, DZ Mob Pay had 95,014 personal accounts and 14,283 merchant accounts, completing 12,682 QR code transactions and 44,369 P2P transfers in its inaugural year.

ATM Transactions: Expanding Access Amid Growing Card Usage

ATM withdrawals exceeded 235 million operations (+19%), with a total value surpassing 4,397 billion DZD (+19%). The number of ATMs rose to 4,679, reflecting significant efforts by banks and Algérie Poste to expand networks, accommodate the growth of interbank cards—which exceeded 21.8 million by year-end 2025—and alleviate pressure on existing points of withdrawal.

This rapid digital financial evolution underscores Algeria’s commitment to modernizing its payment ecosystem, fostering financial inclusion, and laying the foundation for a fully integrated digital economy.
