Empowering the Desert’s Daughters: Algeria’s Ministry of Solidarity Puts Rural and Saharan Women at the Heart of National Development

Algiers, Algeria | In a resolute affirmation of Algeria’s commitment to inclusive growth, the Ministry of National Solidarity, the Family, and Women’s Affairs has placed rural, Saharan, and border-region women at the center of its development agenda. Minister Soraya Mouloudji, during a working and inspection visit to the wilaya of In Guezzam, underscored that empowering these women is not a peripheral program but a strategic pillar in the nation’s socio-economic vision.

This initiative is more than social assistance; it is an engine for economic transformation. By enhancing women’s access to entrepreneurship opportunities, especially in remote Saharan zones, the ministry aims to dismantle geographical and climatic barriers that have long restricted their economic potential. Women in these regions, often homemakers, are already pivotal actors in generating household income and driving local development, defying the limitations imposed by their environment.

At exhibitions in In Guezzam and Tin Zaouatine, Minister Mouloudji highlighted the ministry’s commitment to integrating Saharan women producers into broader markets. The state is actively crafting mechanisms to commercialize their crafts and goods — from culinary specialties to intricate embroidery and traditional leatherwork — ensuring these products transcend local boundaries.

The visit was marked by the direct delivery of tangible resources: professional-grade cooking equipment, sewing machines, embroidery kits, and tanning tools, all aimed at turning creative skills into sustainable livelihoods. These provisions are complemented by formal training, as evidenced by the certificates awarded to women who have completed vocational courses under a partnership between the Ministry of Solidarity and the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education.

Minister Mouloudji called upon grassroots proximity units to intensify awareness campaigns, ensuring that women are fully informed about the state’s support mechanisms. The goal is clear: no woman, no matter how remote her village, should remain unaware of the opportunities available to her.
