Energy and Hydrocarbons: Algeria and Germany Aim to Broaden Their Strategic Partnership
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – November 2025 – In a renewed demonstration of their shared commitment to sustainable energy development and technological progress, Algeria and Germany have reaffirmed their determination to expand bilateral cooperation in the fields of hydrocarbons, mining, and renewable energy. This strategic orientation emerged from a high-level meeting held on Thursday in Berlin between an Algerian delegation and Mr. Frank Wetzel, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
The Algerian delegation was composed of Mr. Noureddine Daoudi, Chairman and CEO of the Sonatrach Group, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, and senior representatives from both Sonatrach and Sonelgaz. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the international conference devoted to advancing the “Algeria–Europe Hydrogen Alliance” (ALTEH2A) and the “SoutH2 Corridor” project — two major initiatives shaping the future of green hydrogen cooperation between Algeria and Europe.
According to the communiqué issued by the Algerian Ministry, the discussions focused on assessing the current state and prospects of Algerian-German collaboration in the energy sector, particularly within the framework of the strategic partnership uniting the two nations. Both sides reaffirmed their mutual willingness to strengthen this cooperation through the implementation of tangible projects in key economic and energy areas, notably hydrogen production and clean energy technologies.
The meeting also underscored the fruitful collaboration already established between Sonatrach and leading German companies, such as VNG, highlighting the positive outcomes achieved in several joint energy projects. The parties expressed their readiness to further deepen this cooperation to encompass critical domains such as training, technical assistance, and capacity building — essential pillars for fostering knowledge transfer and supporting technological innovation in favor of energy transition and sustainable development.
Discussions equally addressed opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships in the deployment of low-carbon technologies aimed at reducing gas sector emissions, as well as in the development, transfer, and commercialization of green hydrogen.
Furthermore, the meeting emphasized Algeria’s ambitious national program to produce 15,000 MW of photovoltaic solar energy by 2035, a major project supervised by Sonelgaz, which plays a pivotal role in advancing the country’s energy transition and diversification strategy.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of deepening Algerian-German cooperation in new technologies and renewable energies. Algeria reiterated its willingness to consolidate its partnership with Germany through innovative, result-oriented projects that serve shared interests, foster sustainable development, and solidify the foundations of a global energy transition anchored in mutual respect, technological excellence, and long-term strategic vision.
