ENICAB Boosts Rail Sector with 2,000 Tons of Annual Cable Production, Eyes Regional Export Expansion

Algeria’s premier cable manufacturer ramps up copper cable production for railway infrastructure, energy systems, and solar power, aiming to reduce import dependency and tap into African and European markets.

Algiers, Algeria | June 12th, 2025 — In a significant step towards strengthening Algeria’s industrial sovereignty and transport infrastructure, the CEO of the National Cable Industries Company (ENICAB), Abdelhakim Louahem, announced on Thursday that the company now produces an impressive 2,000 tons annually of railway-dedicated cables. This production forms part of ENICAB’s broader strategy to meet domestic demand and aggressively position itself in key international markets.

Speaking to the Algerian Press Service (APS) on the sidelines of the inaugural Algeria Railway Expo 2025 held in Oran, Louahem stated that ENICAB’s overall production capacity currently stands at 20,000 tons per year of diverse copper cable types. These include low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical cables, in addition to specialized cables designed for railway systems such as trains and tramways.

ENICAB, a hybrid public-private venture, has recently entered the niche market of train-specific copper cables, following more than a decade of producing tramway cables since 2012. This strategic shift aims to boost domestic industrial integration and significantly reduce Algeria’s reliance on foreign imports in the railway sector.

Further expanding its portfolio, the company also manufactures cables for solar energy systems and fiber optics. Louahem revealed that ENICAB is in the final phase of developing a new high-voltage cable in partnership with the American firm STC Global, a move expected to enhance national energy efficiency and infrastructure resilience.

In line with its export-oriented ambitions, ENICAB is currently working to dispatch shipments of its copper cables to markets including Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Mauritania, and France by the end of this year. The company also plans to broaden its offerings to serve a wide range of sectors, including energy, automotive, agriculture, and industrial electrification.

The Algeria Railway Expo 2025, held under the patronage of Transport Minister Said Sayoud and organized by the communications agency MokaCom, features 22 exhibitors from Algeria, China, Italy, and France. Over four days, the event convenes leading stakeholders from infrastructure firms, locomotive manufacturers, cable suppliers, and signaling systems experts—positioning itself as a major platform for innovation and cross-sector collaboration in North Africa’s railway industry.
