Ep. 01 – From Desert to Abundance : Madar Holding’s “Challenge of the Sahara” Showcases Global Agri Food’s Strategic Vision and Product Diversity for Food Security

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓓𝓮𝓬𝓮𝓶𝓫𝓮𝓻 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 – On the sidelines of the Algerian Production Fair, held at the Exhibition Palace in Algiers from December 18 to 27, 2025, Madar Holding launched a new program, Fair Talk, dedicated to highlighting national success stories in strategic sectors. In its first episode, the program hosted Ms. Marwa Chebrira, an executive at Global Agri Food, one of the earliest subsidiaries established under Madar Holding, founded in 2017 as a 100% Algerian company specialized in agricultural and agro-industrial production.

 

The episode opened with a question that has long dominated public discourse: How can agriculture thrive in the Sahara? A question often met with skepticism due to harsh climatic conditions, scarce water resources, and the deeply rooted perception of the desert as barren land. As Chebrira noted, for decades the Sahara was viewed as inhospitable to agriculture. Today, however, that narrative is being fundamentally rewritten.

Global Agri Food has positioned itself at the heart of Algeria’s national strategy aimed at achieving food security, ensuring the availability of raw materials in the domestic market, reducing the import bill, and ultimately moving toward the export of Algerian agricultural products. Far from theoretical ambitions, this vision is already materializing on the ground.

Chebrira explained that the company currently exploits 4,415 hectares in the Wilaya of Ouargla, specifically in the municipality of Hassi Messaoud, within the framework of agricultural concession. The choice of the Sahara was not accidental. Vast expanses of land suitable for long-term industrial-scale agricultural projects, combined with the availability of significant underground water reserves, made the region a strategic option. She emphasized that agriculture cannot exist without water, and that southern Algeria possesses substantial groundwater resources that can be rationally and sustainably exploited.

To address water scarcity, Global Agri Food relies on modern, water-efficient irrigation systems, notably center-pivot irrigation and drip irrigation, ensuring optimal use of water resources while maintaining high productivity.

In line with the state’s food security strategy, the company focuses on strategic crops, including durum wheat within the cereals sector, fodder crops such as maize, and oilseed crops like sunflower. In addition, Global Agri Food cultivates date palms, a crop historically and naturally adapted to the Saharan environment, contributing to both local production and long-term agricultural sustainability.

Beyond crop farming, the company has expanded into livestock breeding, particularly sheep farming. Chebrira revealed that Global Agri Food launched an initial pilot project involving 300 sheep from three different Algerian breeds: Ouled Djellal, El Hamra, and Rambi. The objective was twofold: preserving Algeria’s indigenous breeds and assessing their adaptability to Saharan conditions. The results were conclusive. The Ouled Djellal and El Hamra breeds demonstrated excellent adaptation, with high birth rates and no significant disease outbreaks, confirming the viability of livestock farming in desert environments.

Building on this success, the company now plans to scale up this activity through the establishment of modern sheep farms capable of accommodating up to 6,000 head, thereby contributing to the supply of high-quality red meat to the national market.

The program also shed light on one of the most innovative dimensions of Global Agri Food’s activities: aquaculture. The company is currently developing two major projects. The first concerns marine aquaculture, with a 100-hectare maritime concession off the coast of Tipaza, where production will begin with 24 floating cages dedicated to species such as sea bream and sea bass. Initial output is estimated at 2,000 tons annually, with ambitions to exceed 10,000 tons per year in subsequent phases.

Equally groundbreaking is the company’s foray into aquaculture in the Sahara. By exploiting groundwater basins, Global Agri Food has initiated fish farming projects focused on red tilapia, a species that has proven successful in desert environments. This integrated model allows for the reuse of nutrient-rich water from fish farming to irrigate crops, creating a natural fertilization cycle and reinforcing sustainable agricultural practices.

Chebrira further emphasized the company’s strong commitment to youth integration, startups, and agricultural technology. Global Agri Food’s workforce is predominantly composed of young professionals from universities across Algeria, whose skills are harnessed to modernize the agricultural sector. The company has signed multiple agreements with startups specializing in smart agriculture, digitalization, and technological innovation, with the aim of introducing advanced tools and methods into farming practices.

In support of farmers nationwide, Global Agri Food also operates agricultural input sales points. One hub in Sétif supplies the eastern and southeastern regions, while another in El Affroun serves the west, southwest, and central areas. These points provide seeds, fertilizers, and plant protection products, alongside technical support tailored to each crop and region, ensuring improved yields and optimized production.

The episode concluded by underlining that Global Agri Food represents more than a conventional agricultural company. It embodies an integrated vision that connects agricultural production, livestock breeding, aquaculture, processing, and commercialization. Currently in the production phase, the company is preparing to move into processing, with the goal of delivering finished products to the national market and creating added value locally.

Through modern technologies, youth empowerment, job creation, and a coherent strategic approach, Global Agri Food stands today as a flagship of Algeria’s agricultural transformation—demonstrating that with vision, innovation, and determination, even the desert can become a cornerstone of national food security.
