The controversy does not stem from judicial indictments or formal accusations against named individuals, but from the heavy political and ethical questions raised about how power is exercised, how decisions are made, and what price the country pays when the state is run according to palace logic rather than transparency and accountability.

The documents point to declared contacts and meetings between Jeffrey Epstein and figures connected to Morocco’s ruling circles, as reflected in official correspondence and information-sharing reports. Regardless of attempts to downplay their significance, such references cannot be detached from the broader pattern that has long characterised the Makhzen’s relationship with global money and influence networks—where proximity to the palace functions as a passport to foreign capitals and decision-making centres, with little regard for political or moral cost.

What is more troubling than the individual details is the governing logic that allows such relationships to pass without institutional oversight, parliamentary scrutiny or public debate. When sensitive external relations are conducted through personal channels rather than state institutions, the country itself becomes hostage to the reputation of a narrow network. “Private connections” cease to be private and instead turn into a national liability. In this context, the appearance of former and current officials is not a matter of legal guilt, but of their role as links within an unaccountable influence network immune from internal checks.

The same documents reveal the vast international reach of Epstein’s network, spanning politics, finance and media. This inevitably revives a long-standing question: how did the Makhzen allow itself to drift so close to circles tainted by scandal? And how were the labels of “diplomacy” and “cultural exchange” used as a cover for contacts that, in a state that respects itself, would have demanded the highest levels of caution and scrutiny?

These revelations cannot be separated from the Makhzen’s broader approach to managing Morocco’s external image: heavy investment in lobbying, the marketing of political narratives through opaque channels, and the systematic privileging of personal loyalty over long-term strategic interest. The result is that Morocco repeatedly finds itself entangled in embarrassing international files that serve neither its people nor their aspirations, but rather the choices of a narrow elite shielded by official silence.

Reducing these facts to a “campaign” or an “attack” is a form of political evasion. The issue runs deeper. It is a crisis of governance before it is a crisis of image. A state that respects its sovereignty does not allow its name to circulate in connection with dubious global networks, nor does it leave international public opinion to raise the questions that the regime refuses to confront at home.

In the end, this controversy does not indict Morocco as a people or a society. It places the Makhzen itself in the dock—politically and ethically.
