EU, WFP Commend Algeria’s Enduring Commitment to Sahrawi Refugees

Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria’s unwavering humanitarian commitment to the plight of Sahrawi refugees has once again been placed in the international spotlight, as both the European Union (EU) Delegation in Algiers and the World Food Programme (WFP) hailed the North African nation’s pivotal role in sustaining the daily needs of tens of thousands of refugees in the Tindouf camps.
During an event held Tuesday in Algiers, Aline Rumonge, WFP Country Director and Representative in Algeria, lauded what she described as Algeria’s “exemplary generosity” in hosting Sahrawi refugees for more than five decades. She emphasized that, for nearly 40 years, the WFP—backed by the EU—has provided indispensable food and nutritional assistance, a lifeline for a population where an estimated 80 percent depend entirely on humanitarian aid for survival.
“Algeria has set a remarkable example of solidarity and commitment,” Rumonge stressed, underscoring the vital partnership between the EU and WFP. This alliance, she explained, ensures consistent and reliable funding, enabling not only the delivery of life-saving assistance but also the enhancement of operational efficiency within the camps.
Echoing this acknowledgment, EU Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua, praised Algeria’s longstanding dedication, describing its support for Sahrawi refugees as a testimony to both humanitarian duty and regional solidarity. He further revealed that just weeks ago, the EU disbursed a €5 million contribution—the second installment of its multi-year partnership with the WFP—demonstrating Europe’s ongoing commitment to the Sahrawi people.
The recognition of Algeria’s role comes at a critical moment, as the Sahrawi refugee population continues to face significant challenges linked to food security, climate pressures, and protracted displacement. For the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s (SADR) Red Crescent President, Yahia Bouhbini, the event provided an opportunity to call upon the wider community of international donors to step forward with meaningful contributions. “This is not merely a humanitarian gesture,” Bouhbini remarked, “but an urgent necessity to ensure dignity, stability, and hope for an entire people.”
Algeria’s enduring presence at the heart of Sahrawi refugee relief efforts, coupled with EU and WFP backing, reflects not only a commitment to alleviating immediate needs but also a broader dedication to international law and the right of peoples to live with dignity.
