EUCOCO’s 49th Conference Reaffirms Support for the Sahrawi Cause and Commends Algeria’s Enduring Commitment

Algiers – November 2025 – The 49th Conference of the European Coordination for Support and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (EUCOCO) concluded on Saturday afternoon in Paris, marking the end of two days of intensive discussions, strategic exchanges, and renewed mobilization around one of the last decolonization issues in Africa. Throughout the sessions, participants unequivocally reaffirmed their support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence, while paying tribute to Algeria’s consistent and principled efforts in accompanying the Sahrawi struggle on the diplomatic, humanitarian, and political fronts.
From the outset, the conference reaffirmed the centrality of the Sahrawi question within European solidarity networks. The commitment expressed this year was particularly pronounced, reflecting growing international concern over the ongoing stalemate, continued human rights violations in the occupied territories, and the urgent need to revive multilateral engagement in line with United Nations resolutions.
On the second and final day, deliberations resumed through several thematic panels, including “Respect for the Fundamental Rights of the Sahrawi People: Responsibility of the International Community,” “Feedback from EUCOCO Field Workshops,” “Citizen Mobilization in Europe: The Example of the Marches in France and Spain and Fifty Years of Solidarity,” and “Strategic Debate: What Prospects for Solidarity?” These panels gathered parliamentarians, trade union leaders, academics, activists, and members of civil society who delved into the legal, political, and humanitarian dimensions of the Sahrawi question. The speakers collectively reiterated their unwavering support for the Sahrawi cause and emphasized the significance of the assistance Algeria continues to provide to the Sahrawi people in their legitimate struggle for independence and the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination.
A powerful message came from the Secretary-General of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA), Amar Takdjout, who urged the international community, European institutions, trade union organizations, and human rights defenders to intensify their mobilization. He insisted on the necessity of ensuring the full implementation of the relevant UN resolutions and called for an end to the political inertia that has allowed the conflict to persist.
The parliamentary dimension of international solidarity was also a key point of discussion. Mohamed Hani, member of the People’s National Assembly (APN) and of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, stressed the pressing need to reactivate the international parliamentary network. Such a step, he argued, would provide renewed impetus to global support efforts and strengthen collective advocacy within legislative institutions around the world.
The conference concluded with the presentation of the recommendations issued by the inter-parliamentary panels and the working groups, followed by the reading of the final declaration by EUCOCO President, Pierre Galand. This closing statement encapsulated the shared vision of the attending delegations and reaffirmed their collective resolve to intensify efforts until the Sahrawi people attain justice and freedom.
For more than three decades, the annual EUCOCO meeting has remained the foremost international platform dedicated to solidarity with the Sahrawi people. It continues to bring together hundreds of activists, NGOs, unions, scholars, and elected officials from across the globe. The National Algerian Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS) once again played a pivotal role in coordinating efforts, shaping the solidarity agenda, and outlining a comprehensive action plan designed to sustain political visibility, humanitarian support, and international advocacy for the Sahrawi cause.
